Oddball hunting rifle

I’m wondering if anyone can help me with information on my most recent purchase. It’s a Mauser 96 that apparently has been remanufactured by Norma. It has “Norma “ stamped on the left side of the barrel, with a proof mark and NP stamped on the receiver. NP standing for Norma precision I reckon. The barrel is 1-9 twist 24”. It also has a Parker hale adjustable trigger with side safety. The stock is oil finished and hand checkered. The bolt handle has been unusually modified. It’s a lovely rifle in excellent condition. But I can’t find anything on the internet like it. Hopefully somebody on this forum knows a bit. Cheers

NP = Norma Proof, Sweden has no Proof House and makers prove their own products, your rifle has the Proof Rune also which came into use with the Norma proofed CG80's, certainly I personally have not seen it on a CG63 even as late as 1976. 86 is your rifles Proof Date. A number of these former FSR barreled actions were re-stocked into beautiful staking rifles like yours, a great find and I hope it serves you well, Cheers.

thanks very much for your reply mate . i'm glad someone knows their stuff i think this rifle is quite rare , i wonder how many they did like mine ? i can't find a image of a rifle like mine on the net . i've tried contacting norma through their facebook as i can't seem to find a email for any customer service. i've only tried soft 129sst loads so far . i'm thinking the 1-9 twist won't take 140's that well . but that's alright as i intend using 6.5x55 with 120-130gn bullets in a similar role to 257bob or a 243 . i'm thinking this may prove to be a very accurate rifle . the scopes mine , but the rifle cost me $900

The stock and safety reminds me alot of a Husky HVA and the oversized Bolt knob is reminiscent of a Tikka M55

I would have thought 140grs would be fine with the 1:9 twist if you kept to short pills and flat bases, keen for some up dates

Yes, the bolt knob reminded me of early tikka m55’s too . I reckon it’s a Scandinavian thing, having to wear gloves in cold weather that bigger bolt knob would be better to use. As to the stock and trigger, there may be a link there. The trigger on mine actually has Parker hale on it . The story I got from where I bought my rifle was a old bloke bought it new and basically it’s lived in a safe ever since. When I pulled the action out of the stock to clean it looked as new. Even a little bit of wood dust inside the stock from the inletting.

I have a M55 that had the large plastic bolt knob on it. Not really to my liking when i had a nice walnut stock. So I changed the knob to a hand made timber one.

I have tried to add a pic for you, but the site says the pic is too big. Never used to do that, as I have posted up pics before.

Yeah, the large bolt knob on my rifle doesn’t look as classy, but in use and especially because it’s cock on close, it’s really nice to use and cycle a round. Scandinavian products are generally a good blend of form AND functionality. Except maybe Volvo’s

You would have seen those Scandinavian service style comps on youtube https://youtu.be/4cnAwRJc7Sw; it's big over there, so they are insanely polished shooters. I always feel this type of target shooting has somewhat of an influence on the euro manufacturers - the slipperines and speed that a sako or tikka action springs to mind. The size and angle of a bolt handle plays an important role in the speed at which a repeater can be cycled. Oh and gloved hands too for cold hands, I suppose...

I think it's a Norma 86 . The NP probably stands for Nitro Proof and 86 is the model .
