Which braked Ruger for Australian game hunting?

Post by teedo » 21 May 2014, 7:26 pm

G'day all,

I'm looking at the 3 offerings from Ruger that come with their removable/replaceable muzzle brake system.

This is for a hunting rifle, everything in Aus except not Buffalo. Not a realistic chance of that for now...

Some of these come in obvious overkill like .375 Ruger, .416 Ruger etc. so I'll leave those out and stay at the lower end of the offerings. Choices are:

Magnum Hunter - 300 Win Mag only.
Guide Gun - 30-06 Springfield, 300 RCM or 300 Win Mag.
Hawkeye African - 300 Win Mag, other too powerful stuff.

Just interested in focusing on these options for the moments. No other recommendations for brands thanks :)

What do you guys think?

I remember Ted Mitchell saying that a 30-06 with the heaviest pill possible would be the minimum requirement for scrub bulls and water buff so really that should take care of pigs and deer no worries... Saying that though I would go with the 300win mag because I've always wanted one

If I had to choose an all rounder from the above I would choose the guide gun in 300 Win Mag or 30-06. Given that the guide gun has a laminate stock and matt stainless finish , both are good for longevity of the gun. And I'd probably go for 30-06 since its great on pigs and deer from what ive heard ... But It can be loaded down a more easily than the 300 Win Mag for other critters. Just my 2c worth anyhoo.

It seems you've chosen..... the rest comes down to personal preference, plastic, timber or laminate, 20,23,24 inch....

I would say however that you dont 'need' a win mag for most everything up to buff..... but its good to have the extra oomph...... there are plenty of other beasts however that are up there, horses, donks, camels....

The 24inch with brake may feel a bit 'long' to tote around, me? I like the short barrel 375/416R!!

30-06 will do it all. In terms of calibre any of them will do.

The different magnum options will do the same - faster and flatter - but there will be a bit more recoil to live with.

TBH I haven't handled a Guide Gun, but it looks the same as the Scout to me which is heavier than I like. I assume the Guide Gun to be the same.

For me it would come down to synthetic or walnut... Magnum Hunter or Hawkeye African respectively.

I should have included that...

Magnum Hunter - 24" barrel
Guide Gun 20" barrel
Hawkeye African 23" barrel

For how much that effects things...

I've got a bit of a soft spot for the African.

You can't beat blued and walnut IMO, and the ebony endcap on the stock is nice.

I have no need for a short barrel rifle and can live without the blast.

My 2c.

Haven't shot the Guide Gun or the African.

One thing I'll chime in with though, I have the Magnum Hunter and bought it in part because there were a bunch of good reviews. Plenty of photos of guys getting good groups with factory ammo. Lots of info.

Last I checked there were bugger all people using either of the other two options. Hard to find much of any feedback on them at the time. Good or otherwise.

Ages ago now, but July issue of the SSAA mag had a write up.

If you've got them all in a pile somewhere...

Thanks for the opinions guys.

All viable choices. I think I'm coming around to the Guide Gun in 30-06 for now.

We'll see how I go. Cheers.
