i'm re evaluating getting a rimfire for the exact reasons you list . i like the no reloading part . i do enough already ;) i've been looking into the cz 457 , but accuracy is a lottery according to some . a weihrauch hw66 would float my boat , but a little more than i want to spend . i've heard 17hmr accuracy drops off after about 40 rounds . have you found this to be the case ?

I had a Savage Bmag in .17WSM, in a Boyd's laminated thumbhole stock.
Brilliant round, hits them like a sledgehammer.
The ammo isn't cheap, but it's bloody effective.

The first pic is the W-Strap on the yards at one of the shearing sheds, I slightly miscalculated my trajectory at 65m

This guy took one just below the left eye at ~125m

If I was going to get a smaller rifle again, it would be the WSM for sure

Yeah mate, I’ve looked at the 17wsm. It seems to have lukewarm ammo support. I think it’s iffy that ammo will be available long term in Australia. It is a very effective round, no doubt about it. The ballistic are impressive

Not a lot about, so I suppose nobody wants to stock it.

I was paying 60c per round about 6yrs ago, price now must be eye watering.

What ever floats your boat mate i have often pondered over a 22 hornet or k hornet. I at the time chose to go down a diffrent path. I grabbed a 222 and love it with all me heart hreat rifle and to date has put down more animals that i could care to remember including my first red deer.

I would definitely go for a 22 hornet over a 22mag for sure i may one day pick something up have to wait and see.

The 22 magnum and 22 Hornet are 2 very different cartridges, I shot tonnes of things with a magnum and you really need to be on point.

Sadly many never get to experience the wonders of the hornet cartridge but I've had many variations, 17 HH, 22 Hornet, 22 AH and my most recent and favourite is a 20 Hornady Hornet which is the pick of the bunch. Sure the 222 is betterer but its a outclassed by the 223. Just enjoy what you shoot and know ur limitations :drinks:

The 222 outclassed by the 223 ! Wash your mouth out with soap sir ! LOL . Actually there’s not much in it between my tikka 223 and my old rem 700 222. 222 is a fly sh!t more accurate, 223 brass is a lot cheaper and less worry if you lose it in the bush . 222 with a 40 vmax is everything a k hornet wishes it was . Hornet brass is more fiddley for me. If I had to have one it would be the 223 , but 222 is a good thing in my eyes. The lack of powder and the above reasons are why I no longer have a hornet

I’ve always failed to understand why people don’t realise that a small calibre is outclassed by something slightly bigger. As velocity goes up so does hitting power and powder usage. Don’t get a hornet, the 22/250 beats it every day. Of course it does, ut so does a swift, or a 243, 244 wm, 25/06, 39/96, 300 wm, 338 and so on.. if you only need a hornet, get a friggin hornet and ignore the 222.

Maybe but the question is about "worth".

Worth to me = cost of factory, cost of components, availability of components, ease of loading, ease of getting a good group and finally does it fit your requirements.

My experience may differ to everybody else. I had my hornet converted to K-hornet. I couldn't never get it to shoot a decent group at 100m like a 222 or 223 with factory or reloads. On a still day the 17HMR would shoot better and was cheaper.
