8.6 Blackout and 408 CheyTac legalities

Post by Blackout&Cheytak_Fan » 09 Sep 2024, 1:33 pm

So... i recently reviewed a post on this website where people were talking about the highest Caliber (in cartridge not BP[black powder]) and some people were mentioning as a Civilian you could get a .50Cal as long as you had the Necessary reasons for it and a Shooting range that was able to provide the necessary spacing for use of said Caliber.

Now.... as much as i love the thought of being able to shoot $2000 a round out of a gun twice weight and about half the length of me... My curiosity is more so around the 408Cheytak and the 8.6Blackouts

Is it legal for me to own a bold action 8.6 blackout rifle for hunting and shooting range purposes for Gunsport? the same goes for 408, though I feel I would struggle with a 408 given that a good marksman can hit a target from a little over 3km away so given the range the rifle could shoot to I'd suspect I'd struggle just as much with the cheytak as i would getting a .50 into the country let alone Owning it

But is it still possible to legally possess these calibers in Australia?

What state or territory are you talking about? Gun laws are not national.

In Queensland only the 50bmg is banned. All other calibres and cases are legal. If a 51bmg exists you can own it as the law states 50bmg specifically. And it is not actually banned it is just category R which 99.9% of the population do not have.

Other states you can own 50bmg.

WA has basically banned anything bigger than 300winmag.

Border Force will not give you any problem importing providing you have a B709 from your State Police, this is your 1st restriction. As alexjones said, in Qld the Act specifies only firearms capable of firing the 50 BMG cartridge are Restricted Category to own so if you have a Genuine Reason, then fill your boots.

Gee, I hope Border Force have improved lately then.
My wife was stuffed around by them for 9 months over a rifle release via B709, "to release from Customs bond", this was 3 years ago. Repeatedly "lost" her emails wanting more info, and complying with their wants.
Then after that, same for me, to get another rifle released for the farm on B709, even after getting an approved PTA from Qld WL (and that involved genuine reason proof, and was a bloomin' chore in itself), Border Force wanted the same proof but even more, including tax returns showing stock losses and even photographic evidence of the losses, council emails of participation in feral control - basically proving wild dogs and pigs exist, proof of where income is coming from and again the same written "why what you already have isn't adequate". And you have to get that one right.
Maybe a bit different, but really on another level and makes the process of getting Police approval for the PTA simple.

I say to anyone, if you want something and you need to do anything by B709, do it and make them do their job and don't give up.
We shouldn't have to do this at all as good Australian citizens anyway, and the more people dig in and do it, the better.
