Stock for Tikka T3X Super Varmint

Post by sbd850 » 01 Oct 2024, 8:39 am

Hey all,

I have a 6.5 Creedmoor Tikka T3X Super Varmint with the Roughtech Green stock. This stock has an adjustable cheek piece, optional Length of Pull spacers and feels fairly solid.

Having said that I've never fired an aftermarket chassis/stock so I have nothing to compare it to, so I don't know any better. The only chassis I've ever fired was a Ruger Precision and that was long ago.

I mainly target shoot from a bench so something that's a little heavier and sits flatter in the bag would be a win overall.

Anyway, I was looking into the MDT Field Stock. It seems like a solid package for the price. My questions are;
Would it be a significant upgrade from the Tikka stock?
I already get pretty consistent half inch groups at 100m in the Tikka stock, does upgrading the stock see further accuracy improvements or is it more of an upgrade in comfort and usability?
If I'm going to buy once/cry once, am I better off spending a bit extra and going for something slightly heavier again such as an MDT XRS or KRG Bravo, or will the Field Stock do the job just fine?
I've seen a video review where there was issues with mag release using the metal magazines with the Field Stock, does the Tikka required Polymer magazines when put into this stock?
Are there other stocks in this price range that I may not have thought of?

Thanks!

I've put seven rifles in MDT chassis with no change in accuracy. I don't believe it improves the accuracy of an already-accurate rifle but, for me at least, it lets me get that accuracy with less effort as the shooter, I like the ergonomics.

If you do end up changing Stocks , I’d be interested in buying your Super Varmint Stock .

Why don’t you try and find the Tikka TAC A1 chassis.

I’ve got an MDT XRS on the way, but can’t fully comment until it arrives and I put it through its paces…..

My T3X Varmint 223 has a GRS Hybrid stock that I use for bench shooting. It has a wide flat forend that sits firmly on the front rest bag and a long flat rear stock that slides level on the rear bag.. Adjustable LOP & Cheek Riser. This is a heavy stock and definitely not something you want to be carrying around in the field. It needed to be bedded to get the correct fit and is not a cheap option. Does it make the rifle shoot better, NO, but it does help me to shoot it better. Definitely improved my scores going from the std Tikka varmint stock. Pic shows fitted with bipod, need to remove the rail when using a front rest

They're very hard to find and are silly expensive, also I've never fired one but the buttstock looks rather flimsy.

Funnily enough I actually bought this rifle over after realising it had a much mroe refined barrelled action than the tac A1 (cerekote, fluted bolt) and figured if I ever upgraded the stock it would be a superior rifle to the tac a1 at a much lower cost.

Thanks, this reaffirms my line of thought. I doubt this rifle could shoot much better, but it'll be a lot more comfortable to shoot off a more stable and level platform.
The GRS is out of my price range but the field and xrs have a lot of the same features with relatively flat buttstocks, adjustable cheek risers and adjustable length of pull.

Thanks for the info.

Have you ever shot a tact a1

No, however from what I know they share the same barrelled action as the Super Varmint.

Nope they don't they have a sako TRG barrel as does the CRT and the action is a LOT more refined than a sv different bolt for a start its microslicked .
And the butt is as strong as any the hole thing is built like a brick ****** my only criticism is they are very heavy compared to most .
The best thing is the mag it's 10 rounds and double stacked so half the length than all the other mags but like most only worth 15% of what we pay for one .

Okay well I didn't know that at the time of purchase and opted for the Super Varmint for the fluted bolt and the cerekote finish. I find the action very smooth and usable. It's also nicely accurate.

I had a look, I highly doubt I'm going to find a tac a1 stock in my price range. I just want something more comfortable than the standard stock and heavier. As I only target shoot at this stage more weight isn't an issue and increased stability is a plus.

It's between the MDT Field and KRG Bravo or perhaps the MDT XRS. The Bravo and XRS both cost $800 abouts, the Field costs $450.

It's a question of whether the Bravo/XRS are worth $400 more than the Field and whether they're necessary for what I'm after, given that the Field Stock offers a flatter and more stable platform as it is and is equal in weight to the Bravo.

The problem with the chassis you're talking about is the actual lack of weight these pics are for a XRS and as you can tell mostly plastic

if you are looking to add weight and stability to your Target Rifle I would be grabbing one of the aluminium type chassis and unfortunately there is no such thing as a cheap one.

My Tikka Varmint Hunter in .243Win moved home from the timber stock to a MDT XRS.

No more accurate but the ergonomics are much better.

All up weight is 13 lbs with 10 rounds in an MDT Poly mag.

MDT sell add on weights, certainly not cheap but its an option.

If I wanted the TAC A1 stock I would buy the cheapest one I could find and swap the stock from the Supervarmint. You get two Tikkas and the stock you wanted.

Te Tupperware stocks shoot great, every Tikka I have bought shot 1/4 inch or better with the standard stock. Don’t expect much or any improvement from a stock swap. Most chassis will add a fair bit of weight.

If it is for benchrest, best to get a benchrest bag riding stock with at least a three inch forend.

I’ve got a GRS Berserk black synthetic stock that I’d swap for your Varmint stock if your interested.
The GRS is a great comfortable/ adjustable stock but it weighs to much for my application.
Message me if your interested
