Sighting In Using A Tripod

I purchased a Bog Deathgrip tripod last week.

Is it okay to use a tripod when sighting in the rifle as opposed to a led sled? (I've got a 30-06, a 223 and a 22LR)

I'd say stick with the lead sled then practice with the tripod

The only way you'll know for sure is to take them both out into the paddock and shoot some groups from each. You really should zero the same way you intend to shoot, if you are going to shoot from the tripod then zero the rifle from the tripod.

Thanks, I would intend to use the tripod for farm shooting and free hand for the 30-06 when hunting. I don't own a led sled but have access to borrow one.

Yes, sand bags are good.
I've used shooting sticks just to check when away hunting. But now using this at range. (Different brand) Getting good results.

Home made ...... it was made for f class and of the type that connects to the rifle but I don't like that so modified it so the rifle would slide .

There's an old car screw jack around here somewhere...
Nice touches like the handles cut into your rear bag height spacers!

Only bastard thing is the exorbitant prices of front benchrest bags! Can't believe those little things are $40 plus.

Iv learnt to sight in the way I'm going to shoot it. As I hunt and live on land I'll never go to a range ever so I Just use my bipod and rear bag.

I'm after the small jobby that straps to the front rest, same/similar as the item on your Rock front rest.

There was a "pro-tactical" front rest for around $20, but that brand is generally, well, typical made-to-the-lowest-possible-quality self-destructs-in 5-minutes stuff and I won't elaborate and risk being sued.

I only use the rear "ears".
Quality, abt 5 out of 10. But the price....

The trap with temu is there is a minimum spend to get free postage. Usually arrives in 5-6 days.

There can be a slight difference in POI using different rests or bipods but it's hardly enough to worry you.

Just sled or bags sight in, then some shooting off the other stuff and noting any change where the groups are centered.

Check your first cold bore shot as it's often a little out. If it's within an inch on the bench, it ain't going to effect the deer shot.

I would like a better rear bag but not paying $160 for one, the Caldwell deluxe setup as pictured above has worked fine for many years.

Learn where your rifle hits at 100 and 200yds and good to go hunting.

Not sure if I was clear mate on what I was after, as said earlier it's not that sorry.
As mentioned before I'm after a front rest, like what's on your Rock that you reckoned you use at the range. To replace the one on mine that is split and ratty, and another to use on the adjustable one I'm making after stealing Dye243's excellent idea.

I use a front benchrest and a rear bag to sight in or play load development, because it is adjustable, unlike those bags, which don't have the height between up/down them to fit some of the rifles we use. Rear rabbit ear bags are dime-a-dozen, but not the small front ones. It's all good.

I bought my front adjudtable rest from Trelley's. Smart Reloader. Very happy with it.

DIY rests with car jacks work. But most don't increase the size of the base. And should only have 3 points of contact.

Ive seen a lot of F class bipods but that is still a first. Not sure how legal it would be? Yes the bipods can be affixed to the rifle and be able to move freely on flat ground and are included in the weight of the rifle. to put velco on the rifle and the bag in a rest would be against the rules.

But back to the original question sight in your rifle the way you are going to shoot it. The POI will be different for each position you take up in most cases.

I bought a Bog Deathgrip tripod some time ago but never use it now for hunting. I zero off a homemade bench in my back paddock using a Caldwell screw adjustable front rest and a rear bag. I found I was too unsteady with the Bog Deathgrip tripod in terms of elevation. Now I carry a set of quad sticks and generally shoot very well off them - as far as 280 yards recently on a fox. I think the reason is that the quad sticks help me stabilise the rifle just in front of my shoulder. Perhaps I'm just getting old and a bit wobbly!
