22 hornet thoughts

Yeah guys i get your points on the .223 being more versitile and of course ammo availability anywhere....but then why not go a 22-250 which also does the same thing and quite a bit more....?

But in my case I have a .243 which then makes 22-250 redundant and a 22 hornet breachs that gap between rimfire and .243..

I cant justify it but i would not say no to either a 223 or a 22-250 though...its tough isnt it trying to work out the perfect range of calibres to own as often our needs over time may well change also...

I also had never even heard of a Sako quad but that looks extremely cool...wish i had have known about that before buying my .17HMR..

perfect range of calibers does exist , for hunting specific parts of the country and for specific jobs . nutting out suitable calibers and ignoring hype is the hard part .the 22 hornet is the perfect round for rabbits foxes and cats . small amount of powder and the flexibility of projectile choice for the job at hand . the hornet can be extremely accurate . i've had a couple of hornets, but as i live in southeast queensland , we don't have high numbers of rabbits , although fox numbers seem to be up and living quite close to suburbia. from what i saw of rabbit and fox numbers around whittlesea victoria , owning a hornet would make sense . couple hours from where i live pigs goats and deer can be found so i own a 308. i've owned a 9.3x62 and done a trip to the territory and 9.3x62 is a good alrounder for up there . absolutely bloody useless for southern qld , bullets are designed for heavier game . i've played with and owned a lot of different cals over the years and have nutted out what suits my uses . the biggest thing most people overlook is projectile performance . one 150gn projectile in 308 does not perform the same as another . we're spoilt for choice these days, with so much choice it can make it harder to get things right . so with regards to the hornet , if you hunt rabbits foxes cats or want to head shoot goats without a lot of noise , hornets pretty damn perfect for the job . a lot of hornets are 1-16 twist and shoot 30-35 gn bullets way better than a 22wmr or a 17hmr further out . getting powder for the hornet is the issue . win296 , lil gun are the best , 2205 is accurate but doesn't get as much velocity . saw the other day on used guns a vic gun shop got in a shipment of lil gun . anyway , JMHO

Got me thinking about trying these pills on some bunnies in January

ntx possibly a bit hard for bunnies , try 35 vmax . very accurate in my hornets , up around 3000 fps with lil gun . they make small game explode . in stock at rebel gun works brisbane . hornady do specific thin jacketed 45gn for hornet , i think sierra might too . but be careful ordering as some projectiles are still made for 223 bore dimensions instead of modern 224

Started with 22 hornet as a young fella, great accuracy and versatility, however have now moved to the 17 hornet and it is outstanding. 223 trajectory, low report and good to 300 for bunnies etc.

Hey Bigrich I have a 20 Hornet so 24gr NTX pills for me, I already get 3550fps with the 32gr so Im thinking I should be able to crack 4000+fps with the lighter projectiles. Are they going to be too hard ? I guess I'll find out, fast 1:8 twist barrel should also help. 204 24gr NTX not in stock so I ordered them, should be available 2nd week of January

20 hornet ? there's a new one for me . i have seen great things on the 17 hornet in the UK . could the 20 hornet be the best of both worlds ? just don't push too hard, hornet brass doesn't have a long life as it is

I grew up shooting a Anshultz 22 Hornet for everything from foxes through to roos, emus, goats and the occasional pig. Yes, we had tickets for the roos, we used to tan the hides too.
It's best usage was always spotlighting around the crops. We could go out for 3-4 hours moving from paddock to paddock, and the roos in the next paddock were never scared off.

Got a Ruger American OD green short barrel shoots great loves the cheap armscor ammo , great on foxes ,rabbit ,cat and i don't have to reload for this one , any bigger 223rem or 308win got it covered ............

I had some serious 22 Hornet thoughts too recently then I got offered a browning T bolt 22 magnum Varmint barrel real cheap so I grabbed it for cheap plinking.

Haven't had a 22 magnum for about a decade

so you reckon the ruger american rimfire is a good thing ? i'm torn between a cz 457 or the ruger

Definitely a vote for the Anschutz. The brass is not good, lots of split necks. But, if you want to introduce a small person, perfect. Will be great once 2205 back on the market, before Christmas they tell me.
