Savage model 99 lever action rifle

Hi all,

Does anyone here own a savage model 99? Upon doing some research on lever guns that shoot 308, these came up as potentially one of the best lever guns ever made. I’m keen to hear any thoughts or opinions from anyone with experience with this rifle.

I know of the browning BLR and Henry long ranger as well. But was just considering all of the options in this category

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any listed on the Australian used gun sites.

Cheers!

Don't own one, but I borrowed one for a while. Nice rifle, reliable but still rear locking and in my opinion less accurate and possibly less durable than either the Winchester 88 or my own Sako Finnwolf, though the Finnwolf is a 243 not the 308 version. I would rate the Model 88 and Finnwolf as the topline of 308 lever rifles.

Had a 25-308 Savage 99 and it was a slick gun, rotary mag and pointed bullets were a good thing. shot a few deer and pigs with but ended up moving it on as it was a little on the heavy side and the trigger fairly average. Much prefer a browning BLR these days

My old blr 243 was the first rifle I bought when the government bought my semis 30 yrs ago… if I do my part it’ shoots 20 mm groups. I’m Taking it deer hunting early June

My dealer happens to have one of these on the shelf at the moment, I spotted it this morning. $1200 I think she said.

I have a 1899H in 22 savage and it's OK I also have a BLR 81 in 308 and it's hands down the best of my lever actions.- the Henry long ranger is a heavyweight copy.
I'm struggling to think why anyone would say that the 99 IS the best lever gun, pre ww2 it may have been.and it's certainly the match for the win 94 and 92.but I still prefer totake them out than the savage.
I also don't share the view that the sako finnwolf and the win 88 rank very highly, their mechanisms are more complicated than a tarts price list and then some.and parts are like rocking horse crap.
But that's just the opinion of a grumpy old bugger who likes simple things.
