Blaze orange rifle options

Post by scrolllock » 10 Jun 2014, 4:02 pm

Evening...

Long story short, looking to get one of the family kids into shooting and, while allowing it, mum has gone into protection mode and every precaution has to be taken to satisfy her.

Never really paid attention at the time because I didn't need it, but in past SSAA mags there have been a few ads for blaze orange camo rifles. Can anyone tell me a few to look up?

Needs to be a small hunting calibre. Still to be decided by probably somewhere between .223 to .243.

Nothing bigger than that, no 30 cal.

Thanks as always guys.

The Haenel Jaeger series of rifles have orange but I'm not 100% sure on calibre and they aren't cheap

i successfully painted a tikka synthetic stock with a a light sand, plastic primer and a range of spray cans from the hardware. then i applied a few coats of satin clear to protect the colour. it was by no means at the level of the pro guys but it looked ok. i used a mylar template as a stencil to give you any pattern you like. i used the range of colour bond colours but there are plenty of day glow/flouro colours available too if you want blaze orange

What about dipping a standard rifle with a orange stencil? We used to dip compounds all the time and they come out awesome!!

Check with your local gun shop as there is wraps which is like a tape you can get to disguise the barrel etc but I do not know if they come in blaze orange.

First thing, try to reason with mum (yes, I knows, reasoning and women can be contradictory terms) the blaze orange is to increase visibility to prevent a person from being shot....not the rifle, blaze orange rifles dont make sense to me (a lot of thing dont though!) although if done right they do look the part, Savage did it quite well.......

Though prior to committing to a new camo blaze or straight blaze, i would give it a go with a few spray packs on a cheap stock...

I reckon that's what we're talking about, the Jaeger 10 was in the latest SSAA magazine.

Price is $1339 so yeah, not cheap.

The calibres the Jaeger 10 orange camo one comes in might not be what you want anyway...

Comes in 6.5x55, .308, 30-06, .300WM and 9.3x62. All too big except maybe the 6.5x55?

Bit more bang from the 6.5x55, up to you...

Camo barrel on that too vs the blued Jaeger. If OP wants to go that far with it.

+1

Only buying a rifle that's orange will limit your choices by 99%.

Better to buy whatever rifle you/he actually wants and wear other safety gear.

Hat, vest, pants... If he's wearing an orange jumpsuit adding the rifle isn't going to do anything.

Other puny calibre rifles... What man would want you now?

If I was spending $1300+ bucks on a rifle I'd want it to be a lot more than just orange.

Just go down to your local Model Aeroplane Hobby shop and buy a roll of Dayglow Orange Oracover heat shrink polyester film. Before you try this out on your fave try it out on a similar test surface first so you get out all the wrinkles
1. Cut the film out into whatever random patterns that you want.
2. Activate the adhesive on the rear with metho/turps so you can [quickly] position it on the stock stretching it as you place it down, with light pressure tac down in one direction. Stretch it in other direction once it is positioned, tac down. Eliminating air bubbles as you go.
3. Gently heat the film with your wife's hair dryer until it starts to shrink .Working from one side to the other eliminate air bubbles as you go using a soft cloth to push them toward the 'unshrunk' edge.
4. Seal it down with a little finger pressure and mild heat all over.
5. If you get air bubbles trapped, prick them at one end with a pin and with gentle heat + finger pressure work the air our through the pin hole.

When you are finished it should have a finish that will stand up to a couple of months hunting. [Until mum is placated] :P

The colour can always be removed lifting one edge with a hobby knife and peeling, any adhesive can be cleaned up with metho/turps and your resale value remains OK.

If it is for someone new to learn with a Savage Axis XP youth would be a great choice.

If they outgrow the youth stock, for $99 + post you can get a Boyds stock for it.

Due to this I wouldn't be afraid to bust out some paint on the factory tupperware if required.

What about a sleeve/sock in orange. Easy to make from an orange vest. But I agree with norton, much better to wear a vest and cap, easier and cheaper too.

Top idea :)

I don't like the material of a lot of the camo stuff. Uncomfortable.

Some regular clothes with hot orange over the sleeves would cover it though :)

mmmm perhaps I was not clear. I meant an orange sleeve over the rifle. Much the same as the cammo ones you can fit.
