A Tale of Two 45’s

Post by Eduardo » 13 Jun 2014, 11:50 am

So, I haven’t shot my 45’s in a while. I’ve been low on ammo plus the last three guns I’ve purchased have been getting most of the range time (Keltec SU16A, Saiga 7.62x39 and an AR build). I haven’t even owned these guns for a year yet, maybe 10 months. So I don’t have much experience with them to begin with.

I’ve been asked here and there which gun is more accurate. Or asked better, which gun am “I” more accurate with and I really haven’t had an answer.
So I decided to run a bit of a quick comparison. Having not shot either gun in a while makes it a more fair comparison because neither has the advantage of more range time over the other. I wanted to treat this as a short sweat exercise in how easy the guns are to shoot well.

A total of only 40 rounds were fired. 10 each for a short warm up and 10 each which are posted below.

The conditions
- 15 yards (13.716 meters)
- 45ACP Federal 230 Grain FMJ
- 5 rounds on each target

Player Number One - Colt Rail Gun

Player Number Two - Beretta PX4 Storm

So, if you ask me the results are pretty inconclusive. Both easy to shoot. Both have a decent trigger, I like the sights on the Colt better. Plus the overall feel of the colt is a bit better, but it's a good deal more expensive so that's to be expected. The Colt has not had a single failure of any kind after the first 200 rounds or so(break in). The Beretta has not had a single failure of any kind ever and due to the rotating barrel I think it has less recoil.

That's all for now. Going to try this little experiment again with some of my other guns. Maybe next I'll compare my Mossberg MVP to my Keltec SU16. I expect the Mossberg to be better, it would be interesting see if reality matches my expectations.

Good shooting, often hard to gain such consistency with .45s

Personally I would go with the Colt, real men use 1911s

Colt looks like the winner to my eyes.

Everything's more or less touching instead of stringing out so widely.

Thanks gentlemen, this is the stock coating.
Here's the product page, they have this model and the all black.

I will eventually get the Sig Sauer Tacops as well,

But I wanted my first 1911 to be a Colt so I could be cool like my Dad :D

How do you find the little Beretta compared to the heavier Colt?

It must whip around heaps being lighter?

I see it's got the Pachmayer grip on there.

.45 a bit challenging on the hands in a little pistol?

Well, this is a full size Beretta, not small at all. I've added the only picture I have of them side by side so you can get a feel for the size difference. But you're right, there is a difference.
In my opinion, the Beretta has less overall recoil due to the rotating barrel design but it does have significantly more muzzle flip. The Colt has a bit more overall recoil (unexpected) but far less muzzle flip making follow up shots quicker. The Beretta is lighter at 27.6 oz (785g) compared to the Colt at 36.5 (1035g) which is very evident. The Beretta is very comfortable to shoot though. I am going to work on my wrist control which at this point is not good.

Ahh I see. That's a lot bigger than I realised from the first picture.

Somehow from the first photo I took it to be about half way between the size of the colt and the small Ruger there in the photo of all of them.
