Does shooting big calibres get old?

Post by halberg » 05 Jul 2014, 10:44 am

Hi guys,

I know a few guys are recoil junkies. I definitely like having a shot now and then of something biig with some real bang :D

Do you guys find you get over shooting your large calibre stuff regularly?

I see a couple of blokes have some big shooters here but are hunters from what I read so aren't shooting a lot.

Anyone regret buying their big calibre rifle? Get over the recoil? Get over the cost?

I'm thinking 300 win mag minimum as "big".

I don't know if this counts because I've only had it for about a month, but I love my .338 Win Mag!

Kicks the s@*t outta me, Nah it's not that bad. I bought it for hunting afar from WA so I wont be shooing it too much. I pick days when the range will be unpopulated because of the muzzle blast, and because I'll get the old "what the hell do you have that for??!!". as to tired of it.

After about 30 rounds I''ll admit I'm looking for my .243 or even .30-06 but once you get it home and clean it up, awwww you fall in love all over again hahaha sort of a love hate relationship until it bowls over a Sambar, then I'll alway love it. Oh and seeing one of these 225 grain Interbonds plough into a water cooler bottle is something else!

Hope this helps

(oh and the cost is still up there despite reloading, but i'm usually using .243 or .30-06)
I really hope Export isn't actually Exported, mighty embarrassing for WA, hahaha I'll still drink it though

Yea no one likes to get beat up most guys have other guns to shoot like 22s and hand loaders can load them down if they are just looking to shoot and not get beat up.

The largest thing I shoot anywhere what you could call 'regularly' is a .300 win mag on a hunting trip now and then.

It's good fun, but personally I wouldn't want one as my daily shooter.

Just too much recoil/cost for what I need. If I was hunting bigger stuff regularly then I could live with it.

Tell them it's for putting a muzzle brake on and shooting next to people to teach them to mind their own business

I'm convinced the recoil on my .270 gets stronger every year.

It's not because I'm getting old and soft.

You guys buy that, right?

i personally don't see my self buying a "big" caliber like the ones talked about but hey I might buy one just so I can try something different from time to time...but I don't think that would be a justifiable reason for a rifle purchase to the misses lol

she beat me up with the broom stick i reckons lol

I have a bit of a thing for the big guns, maybe cause I have a chronic case of small man syndrome so I need to make up for it in other ways. Currently in the "Toy Box" there's a Steyr HS 50 M1, DTA HTI in 375 Cheytac & 50BMG, Barrett M98B 338 Lap and a soon to arrive Barrett Mod99 in 416. There's also a selection of regular everyday rifles I hunt with, I drag the big fellas out now and then and let some of the boys I hunt with experience the rush of 750Gr leaving the muzzle in a hurry. It's just as much fun watching the expression on someone's face after their first shot of a 50cal then pulling the trigger yourself.
