My first rifle

Post by bhs » 06 Jul 2014, 7:07 pm

Hey everyone.

I recently got my license and just ordered my first set up.

Browning T-bolt .22lr
Zeiss Classic Diavari 6-12 x 56 ret4

Just wanted to know what you guys think of my set up as a first rifle and if there is anything wrong with it.

I plan to use it for hunting small game.

Good combination though maybe a little over scoped, not sure you need 12x for what is essentially a 100m rifle.

At least when you step up to a larger calibre you can move the Zeiss to it and put a smaller scope on the 22.

What other rim fires did you consider? I've got a PWS T3 that shots like a laser though this Browning looks and from the videos I've seen on Youtube shoots as good as it looks.

I'm sure you'll be very pleased with this setup.

Hey mate, good choices are important if you want a package to last you a lifetime

I don't have a problem with the mag range of your scope choice, in fact I think it's about perfect but 56mm is a big objective. The specs show this scope weighs 19.8 oz, 20.3 oz (w/ illum. reticle). just for example my Leupold rimfire scope weighs around 11oz.

Also the Diavari is parallax free at 110 yards, meaning that at common rimfire hunting ranges you might experience more parallax error than with a 60 yard rimfire scope.

Yeah that was my plan, I was planning to move the scope to my centrefire when im comfortable shooting a rifle since i have had close to nil experience.

I was also having a look at the CZ455 , is there anything else you would recommend ?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not so fussed about the weigh of the scope. is there anyway to fix up the parallax? and will it affect my shooting a lot?

Thanks for your reply.

feeewww! that big zeiss on a .22? okay! its all good. 3 times the value of the gun but all good. whatever makes you happy.

But hey! its a 30mm tube and man! pluck the hairs of off a rabbits back, don't get me wrong best scope around but there are more practical scopes for a .22.

Zeiss make a really nice 3-9x something specialist rim fire scope in the conquest line with a 1 inch tube that won't weigh you down. I'm pretty sure its a German made job. Perfect for that little T-bolt which BTW is a fine choice for a first gun.

Welcome mate! you'll never regret buying your first gun.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

Chances are you will quite happily shoot a 100m (110Y) parallax scope at shorter ranges without even noticing but the extra weight up top could make a lighter .22 difficult to handle

I guess you won't know until you try eh? :D

Good choice, is indeed 'well scoped'

I was afraid it was to be a 'my first rifle' thread with a 308win as your first...

Next a 12 gauge...

Have fun an be safe.

Agree Chronos . Good combo, a bit overscoped

Looks good to me mate. I have the same rifle and it's been great for me.

If you don't mind the bigger scope for now then it's all good.

Very nice rifle, I have used one and couldn't fault it out of the box. The problem with a centerfire scope on a .22, as already pointed out, is unless you can get a 100% consistant cheek location each time you will be anything up to 50mm out at 30m simply due to parallax.

Not every shot is going to be in the same position either and this will cause problems.

INMHO you would show better results with a cheap 3-4 x 40 Nikko or the like.

Sorry to have to sound negative but them is the facts, it is simply the wrong scope for what you are going to do. To say otherwise, simply to make you feel good, is leading you down the wrong path.

But it will be a good centerfire scope later on.

Thanks for your advice. what would be a good scope you would recommend ? i had a look at the Nikko pro staff but the parallax was at 100 yard, would that be the same problem ?

There is a specific prostaff rimfire scope set at 50 yards(about 45 odd meters), there are plenty of rimfire scopes about at very reasonable prices.

Leupold, Redfield, nikko stirling, bushnell, tasco all make rimfire scopes or get an adjustable objective or side focusing scope- although for hunting I reckon a fixed objective is less hassle. 1-6 or 3-9 magnification is perfect 4-16 still very usable.

There are many good ones out there for under $200, it doesn't need to cost the earth for a .22. You have chosen one of the best hunting .22's available in Australia, it deserves a scope that will allow you to use its full potential in the field.
