Pump vs lever action

Post by lapp » 21 Jul 2014, 5:15 pm

Hi guys,

Like is said, pump vs lever action?

What do you guys prefer and why?

Pros? Cons?

Thinking of adding something other than a bolt action to the safe :D

Will get used for hunting eventually too.

Cheers.

Big Fan of pumps as you can cycle the action and never move off point!!!!!
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

I fell like lever actions are better for staying on target while quickly cycling the action. I think that racking the slide on a pump moves the barrel around too much but I've only used a 7600 maybe others are better for it

I prefer levers. They are great fun in the field or on targets.
The Winchester 94 Lever is one of the most popular hunting rifles of all time with over 7.5 million made according to Wikipedia.
I have it in 32/20, 44/40 and 30/30. All really good fun.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

Whichever you are more comfortable with. Both have calibers for just about any purpose, none really stands out as 'better' because neither truly are. You would do better by having a go with both and see what you find most comfortable. I prefer a lever, because I was taught to shoot with one, I can keep point of aim whilst working the action. But someone who is competent with a pump should be able to do the same.
Do you have any rifles in mind? The only pump action rifles in centrefire that I know of are the Remy 7600/7615, the latter being very overpriced for what it is.
Pros verse cons would vary depending on caliber and rifle.
Typically pumps run off of external mags and levers run off of internal tube mags (except the BLR). DBM are nice because you can quickly load and unload a rifle, but you become reliant upon the mags, if they are empty or not full, well. Tube mags are also good because you can easily top them up (side feed on the receiver), but refilling the whole tube takes time, same for clearing the rifle. With capacities ranging from 5-12 rounds depending on caliber and rifle.

I found the Browning BLR and levers in general are quieter in recycling than pumps. The Browning uses a box magazine too so pointed hunting bullets can be used.

I find the opposite for me. I'll take a lever any day.

Pump I'm swinging the front all over the shop when cycling it.

Lever I can steady my aim with my forearm while cycling with my grip hand more steadily.

Don't suppose you have any photos of your Browning BLR groups?

What calibre are you shooting also?

I've been Googling to try and find without any luck.

Pump is arguable a little faster to use.

Easier on the fingers too for fast work.

Levers got style though ;)

Get down to your local range at try one of each.

I'm sure a fellow shooter will be happy to give you a few shots of their. Sling 'em a few coin for their ammo and you'll know :)

Both super fun; I own pump Rimfires which are wicked for plinking and small vermin, Rimfire and Centerfire levers are awesome too and quieter then pumps in my opinion. But it depends what you use them for...

While we are on the topic has anyone bought or fired a Taurus thunderbolt? I like the idea of 13 rounds in a pump action but couldn't justify getting one unless it was released in 44.

Mixed reports on them at the moment.

I've watched a few reviews where all goes well enough. Accuracy is decent, price is reasonable.

A few people having feeding problems though. The fired case will eject but the next jams.

Only in .45 Colt at the moment which I guess you know too. No 44.
