Greasing rifle bolt

Post by newgunner » 06 Aug 2014, 8:06 pm

Hey guys/gals,

I'm just wondering if I should use any grease on my rifle bolt on my Tikka T3 super Varmint. I find it a bit hard to unload the bolt sometimes

If so, what kind of grease should I use, teflon?

Cheers.

Try and not grease the bolt, it just seems to attract dirt and grit which is terrible for the action.

Saying that, greasing the lugs of bolt which engage to lock the action is a good idea. Try and not over do it, like I said it just attracts s**t and a light coating is ample.

A quick wipe over of the bolt with a lubed clothe is enough before putting away.

People might not agree with me but I've never had any trouble with mine.

Good luck :D

Never needed to with mine, just a light wipe of oil for cleaning, but never for lubing it.

Is the bolt stiff to open when the chamber is empty? Or only when you're ejecting a spent case?

Could be the brass, not the bolt.

Let us know.

Sounds like something is wrong. Tikka T3 Bolts are one of the smoothest, easiest and quietest to operate in the business. If it's hard then something is going on.

Don't put grease on the actual bolt and certainly not inside it. Very light coat of gun oil or just a wipe with an oily rag should be all that's needed to keep it smooth to operate. A tiny, tiny dab of "high pressure" grease on the back of the locking lugs will halp save those from gawling. I find the little tubes of special gun grease the easiest and cleanest to use and it's always in the cleaning kit at home or away.

The bolt of my T3 lite definitely is, and have used a couple of mates as well which are exactly the same.

Smooth as silk.

That's the only time I've ever had trouble.

Stiff when firing loads formed in another chamber, and couple of times when the neck was a little long.

Nothing outside of that though.

I was too heavy on the oil when I first starter shooting and didn't really know what I was doing.

Way too much oil. One shoot after it was dirtier than before I cleaned it. Could have left it alone
