Remington not what they used to be?

I was at my local today looking at a new Remington 700 CDL, the thing that led me to this was shooting a mates rifle a while ago which is a 700 CDL.

Same rifle AFAIK, but my mates is about 15 years old or something I think.

Wasn't sure if I was imaging things, but I recalled my mates old rifle feeling a bit more solid that the new off the shelf one? The guy at the counter also said he wasn't a fan of the 700 "any more" as he thought old ones were better too.

I'm going on memory here about my mates one, I'd only shot it a few times so not intimately familiar with it... Tough to compare but I was thinking buying a second hand one might be the go instead of a new one if this is the case?

Anyone shot new and old? What do you think, Remington not what they used to be?

As far as I know the action hasn't changed in that time? Can't see why it would be any different now?

You sure you're mates CDL was factory standard?

Chance it had an after market stock? Full bedding?

There are any number of modifications that could make it feel different/better.

On the subject of fuzzy memory...

There are many similar varieties of Remington 700's... You sure you're talking about the same rifle, new and old?
See you on the firing line.

In any case, Remington 700's have a well deserved reputation for accuracy and quality.

And affordable... I think they're about $1,100 these days or something like that?

There have been some quality control issues reported in more recent years but I have no first hand experience with that so I'll leave it to others to comment.

Sure you can get a Sako or whatever for "top quality" but they're 2-3 times the price so you'd expect that.

Good value rifle IMO.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

Some, not all.

I think the SPS tactical and some of the other synthetics are around the $1,100 mark.

700 CDL is about $1,700 from memory? Still not terribly expensive though...
