Cleaning a stainless barrel different to blued?

Post by 0423socket » 17 Aug 2014, 3:25 pm

Hi all,

I've just bought a stainless Tikka hunter in .243 and I was wondering if there is anything I should be doing different with the new stainless from my blued barrels when I get it home and do the first clean and then every other clean.

All tips and pointers greatly appreciated.

Barrels are barrels, do not become complacent because it is stainless, it will rust if not looked after.

Stainless is definitely easier to clean than blued IMO. s**t just comes of quicker and easier.

Like Walt says though they still need cleaning, they're not indestructible so clean as normal :)

Missing the point here I think chaps...

He's asking if he should do anything different, not do less. i.e. will following his cleaning routine for a blue rifle damage a stainless one.

0423socket, assuming I've got that right then no there isn't anything different you need to do.

If it's second hand...
Patch out any oil in case there is too much in there.
Patch with some copper solvent and scrub it out with a nylon brush to remove any residue.
Patch in a new thin layer of oil to protect it until you're ready to shoot (patch out the oil so you have a dry barrel before shooting)

If it's new...
There won't be any copper from firing so no need for solvent.
There will be tonnes of grease in the barrel from the manufacturer - patch it out good!
Once you've given it a good patch and scrub and you've got a nice shiny new barrel interior oil it until you're ready to shoot as above.

Hopefully I haven't assumed incorrectly there and just explained a whole bunch of crap you weren't looking for

Im a proud owner too of a new SAKO 85 Varmint S/S in .223 and wondered the same. Other than patching out my new barrel, that's all I have done thus far, as only a handful of rounds have been through it at this stage while sighting in my scope, I'd like to know if there are anything specific to a Stainless barrel that I should be aware of. I will be keeping an eye out here as well. :)

Same as your blued rifles.

Stainless is easier to clean but (It's been said 1,000 times) it still needs care.

Treat it rifle and your Tikka will last you a lifetime.

I much prefer stainless to blued, still requires cleaning but just less time required. Must less time scrubbing copper out of the rifling...

I don't think I'd ever take another blued hunting rifle where stainless was available.

Stainless is pretty hardy, not much will damage it chemically, there are a few things that will strip blueing off a gun, not stainless tho.
