I'd suggest it depends on the dealer.... some would have a definite 3 month limit (which is pretty standard fare) whereas others base it on the person they're dealing with.

My LGS have never limited me with laybys.... I've taken 4-5 months or more for a few rifles.... took 6 months to actually take home a rifle I bought outright but then couldn't take home until I had new classes added to my licence. They didn't care in the slightest... mind you, I've spend a good few thousand in there over the past couple of years, bought or transferred about 10 rifles in that time, and pretty much buy every Sportco or Fieldman they dig up for me. They know I'm not on a huge income while doing my apprenticeship, but know I'll eventually get my paperwork sorted and front up with the cash ;-)

However long they're happy to do it for.

If it takes you a year and they'll do it... No worries?

3 months is pretty "standard" I think.

But if they'll do longer that's up to them.
