Rossi or Marlin?

Post by andym79 » 27 Aug 2014, 7:12 pm

Hi guys, I was considering a new lever in 44 mag.

Would you go for a new Rossi or Marlin?

Before 2006 it would have been a now brainer, but the stuff I have heard in the last 4 years urges me to gather opinion.

Never used a marlin in 44 but I've put nearly 500 rounds through my Rossi and it hasn't missed a beat. These days I've heard equal amounts of horror stories from both these days so it comes down to price and preference of looks

I've got a pre-Remington takeover Marlin Model 1894 in 44 mag.

Love it.

Can't speak for the modern Remlins, but if you can find a good condition original it's a winner.

Seems to be lottery with the Remlins.

Half getting great shooters, half getting lemons.

The Rossi are too uncomfortable to shoot for me.

Metal butt plate and only 2kg isn't exactly shoulder friendly.

The Marlins are about 2.9kg with a thin rubber pad which makes a world of difference. Still not heavy either.

Do they do DIY replacement recoil pads for those kind of butt plates?

The curved ones?

Not that I've ever seen?

Only flat ones so they're more versatile, fit more rifles so they can sell more.

You could always get the slip over kind.

Probably just not the replaceable screw in kind like limbsavers.

Hate the slip on ones personally.

Adds way to much to the length of pull for me.

Personal opinion there.

Or if the recoil is too much you can take off your skirt and wrap it around the butt plate

Funny stuff

Does that work for powerful levers like the 45-70 or say for a lion gun like the 458 Win Mag?

Did that, still doesn't help enough.

Also it's not a skirt, they're crotchless man shorts!
