22-06 or 22-08?

Post by andym79 » 06 Sep 2014, 12:36 pm

Hi guys is there or has there ever been a 22-06 or 22-08?

As in a 30-06 or 308 necked down to 22 cal.

I guess it would be like a 220 swift on steroids!

Yep there's been 22-06 wildcats done. It would be a barrel burner.

Reportedly they'll crack 4200+fps with a 55g bullet from a 24 inch barrel!

Better still would be a fast twist barrel and a sleeker bullet like a 75g Amax. 3600fps plus should be doable with that bullet.

Fairly impracticable I would have thought. A 22-250 with a fast twist barrel would be a smarter option for the average punter that wants to use their 22 centrefire out a bit further. A 22-308 would not gain a lot over a 22-250 really. A 22-06 would be overbore in the extreme.

You actually want one of these specifically or just something that'll do the job you're imaging for it?

Sound like reinventing the 22-250 a bit?

There is or was a 22-everything at some point.

22 Cheetah is a necked down .308.

Very hard on your barrel though.

I was going to say...

22-06 you'd just about watch the barrel burning away as you shoot it.

Smaller case capacity though than the ideas put forth here.

.308 has about 15% more case capacity than the 22-250 off the top of my head.

.30-06 must be 40% or more larger?

Much higher velocities to be gained. Needed or not is another story...

(Done that off the top of my head, hopefully I've got those numbers right enough)

Yep, Its all been done, the Germans did the 5.6x57, (based on the 8x57), its very hot, with more case volume than the WSSM.....
Not the hottest factory 22, that goes to the Superexpressvomhofe.. (if you prefer to say it at once) which does use the 227 in rimmed or 228 in rimless version and comes in at about a 22-06 in volume....
