Ruger Scout in .223 - Not so sure...

Post by squirrelhunter » 10 Sep 2014, 12:08 pm

I've got the .308 Scout which I think is great, it does exactly what it says it's meant for.

The Ruger® Gunsite Scout Rifle, the one rifle to have if you could have only one. It is the perfect lightweight, hard-hitting, do-it-all bolt-action rifle.

Ruger have announced they're now doing one in .223 as well. This I'm not so sure about...

The "one rifle" idea - I wouldn't have a .223
The Scout isn't actually all that light but for a .308 a little weight to reduce the kick isn't a bad thing so I have no complaints. For a .223 I'd say it's heavy.
"Hard hitting" - Nope, not in .223,
"Do-it-all" - Just nope.

I'm thinking they've gotten carried away with the hype they generated with the .308 scout. I can't think who will buy one of these in .223.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

My thoughts on the Ruger Scout are I wouldn't own one full stop, It doesn't do a thing for me to be honest, I've used one and yep didn't do it for me one bit.

Mate I LOVE my 308 Ruger Scout, and I think I got the pick of the litter with it. In saying that Ive been looking at the .223 version for the last day or so, and I too have a few doubts, weight being one. It will fill a niche and I'd say it will sell well, although the price is going to be high. At the end of the day I think I'd go for a standard M77 in .223 myself :)

I don't think the .223 really suits the Gunsite Scout idea.
Jeff Cooper didn't either.

Still a cool looking rifle though.

Completely of point for what a Scout rifle should be with this calibre.

They're caught up in the popularity of the first one I'm sure.

No doubt this will still be a money maker though.

Everyone is getting too hung up on the scout concept just think of it as a bolt action 7615... Which has no point in my eyes

It's a good concept, just not ideal (IMHO) for many of the people who buy one.

But then who am I to say what works for people.

Happy shooting to them.

i will never buy one

- its .223 but instead of an AR mag it uses a special snowflake $70 mag
- 10 round capacity
- +$1000

no thanks ruger
the scout rifle was a good concept 50 years ago, but its a little dated today with all the semi autos

i think it will do well over seas though

No semi-autos for us here is the difference.

People have to work with what we're allowed (which isn't much).
