Looking for feedback and opinions on remington 7600 police and long barrel in both .223 and .308 and how people rate them as a hunting rifle and how they group with hand loads, list pros and cons and recommended optics and accessories.

Hiya Benny,

I've got a 7600 in .308

Bought new, and put an Aimpoint Micro H-1 on it.

The red dot sights don't really allow for accurate shot placement at any real distance in general, and I've never bothered to put a regulation scope on it.

However, in saying that, I have dropped pigs with it at just on 250 metres, so I guess that's a start.

My main intention was for close range shooting with the aimpoint.

I too would be interested to hear from people that use them with scopes on a regular basis at decent distances.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!

Either calibre will be just as accurate out to a few hundred metres for everyday hunting.

.223 and .308 are very different animals though, what are you planning on hunting?

What are you hunting?

What ranges are you expecting?

Choice of calibre will effect pros and cons too... Give us a little more info to advise on.

.223 or .308 is hard to know what you're after? Varminting at range with the .223 or pigs in the scrub at 50m in the scrub with a .308 pump...

They group good.

I have a pair of 700 bolt action in .22-250 and .308 and the 7600 shot just as well.

A shooting buddy of mine has one in .308 and sharing the same loads accuracy was just as good with the same ones.

Much the same feedback as above.

A mate of mine has one with a fixed 4x as a hog buster for his property.

There's always some fresh pork lying around when I'm there so something's working ;)
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

I've used them a couple of times.

Well built, my only complaint is that the trigger pull is stiff.

.308 for this.

I've never really understood pumps in small calibres like .223.

Pumping out quick shots with a heavy hitter at a herd of pigs is all good, is anyone doing this for rabbits and foxes with a .22 though?

That's a pretty standard complaint I think.

They have a hook sear engagement instead of a flat one like most rifles so it's hard to get a real crisp break with them.

There was a dud few years a while back where accuracy went a bit. So the buzz on the net says anyway.

Buy an old one, or a new one now and accuracy is meant to be good though. No complaints against any particular calibres in this regard.

I have the police 308 that comes with the wilson combat sights. I have the rear sight dropped as low as it will go and its still shooting half a meter high at 200m. Only a recent purchase so it's only early days on this issue but it sux to have to deal with this sort of problem on a brand new rifle. Group is not bad however.

I shot one in .243 to help a bloke with a dodgy scope a while back at the range - they'll 3-shot clover at 50m easy, so (3-shot) moa no doubt. Reminded me a bit of the accuracy stigma attached to lever guns - it's more the sights and trigger that let these kinds of rifles down. People right them off because of heresay. 7600 plenty accurate enough for long shots on medium game (with some decent optics) - but then again that's not really what they're designed for...

Did you go 4MOA or 2MOA option for the Aimpoint?
