Turning my 30/30 in to silhouette gun

Post by andym79 » 01 Nov 2014, 6:09 pm

Hi guys, I have a regular 30-30 with a 20 inch standard barrel, its good to 100 yards, but to light and short to use as a silhouette rifle. I want to modify it to have a heavy 26" barrel.

Could a suitable barrel be machine from a 30 cal barrel blank?

Who would be the best company to import or buy barrels from in Aus. Specifically for a Winchester 94.

I want a barrel like this only heavier.

I couldn't tell you a price off the top of my head but basically any 30 cal blank should be doable for you.

Just need a smith to ream the chamber in 30-30 for the fit.

Not to rain on the parade are you talking about shooting in modern centrefire silhouette with this? Not lever action silhouette?

I don't have the energy tables etc. in from of me but for 200m LAS I'd be surprised if your existing 30-30 doesn't cut it?

If you're talking about doing 500m+ silhouette shooting against modern centrefire, 7mm-08 etc. that's going to be a tall order.

30-30 ain't a 500m cartridge.

If I remember the rules right the barrel has to be original to compete in SSAA silhouette?

It can be rebored to a larger calibre but has to be the original.

If you care about competing that is, or if you're just doing it for fun.
