Welcome to the fun world of shooting. My shooting buddy has a BTVS and loves it - wants a thumbhole stock for his 12g now :)

What type of shooting are you planning to do?

some club stuff, mainly to get my eye in, and a bit of hunting on friends properties. i have been told i can access some properties up in the north west through a friend of a friend, so anything and everything is on the radar.

Fantastic choices in my opinion, as they are almost identical to my first two! I have a MkII BTVS and love it, and went with stainless synthetic T3 in .308. Sometimes i wish i had gone with a wood or laminate stock but i do a lot of walking so after a few hours marching through the scrub I'm thankful for the lighter weight. You will love them both!

sounds like we have good taste chrispy88!

i am a chippy by trade originally so i have a "thing" for wood stocks. Guy at the gun shop tried to sell me a synthetic but i couldn't look past timber. i would make a gun safe out of timber if i was allowed.....

Not being an expert, i'm not really sure of differnces between timber and synthetic from a performance perspective, I made the decision purely on asthetics. i have only used timber stocked rifles so far.

Was thinking i would just get a cheap .22 so i could get the eye in without the cost of .308 bullets (plus try to bring some bunnies home with me and not turn them into mince with the .308). Blew the budget, but the laminated timber looks and feels great.

Synthetic is very low maintenance. Doesn't absorb water, can't swell, doesn't need oiling to take care of it like timber. In that respect it's great, if you were getting a wet weather rifle synthetic would be hard to pass up.

It's just not very "nice". Timber is.

Ah. Thanks Redwood.

Not planning to be out in the rain too often.

So, are all/most rifle stocks (timber ones) oiled rather than a varnish/polyeurethane?

There are a lot of options, I wouldn't say "most" rifles are one thing.

You're 3 basic options for stock are synthetic (plastic), timber and laminate.

Synthetic we covered.

Stocks of layered laminate are a "best of both worlds" kind of deal. They look ok, are solid like timber, not flimsy like plastic, and keep the water out. They're easy to clean just with a wipe down of your cleaning product.

Personal opinion here but I think most agree timber is the nicest. Looks good, feels good, that's what you want, right? Every stock needs cleaning, the timber just need a little extra to keep them looking good. This could be oil, or wax, or both, or whatever you decide you like. There are multi-purpose cleaner/lube/protection products like Prolix, Bore-Tech do some and others I can't name off the top of my head.

There are lots of good products, there isn't really a single "right" one. Opinions will vary at least.

The 30-30 is just fun, its a lever, Great for 50-60m, Great for plinking and targets, and just all around fun... Never mean to rub it in, I just enjoy my new hobby.. I hear about your problems over there, I find is scary that a group of people can dictate to another group of people that they cant have something just because it looks 'military' I dont dress my rifles up, they are tools, but honestly, I find it scary the closed minded nature of most people, willing to give up anything to make themselves feel safe...

and so on and so forth...
