Straight pull rifles, why so few?

Like the question says... Why are there so few straight pull rifles available?

I'd been keen as to have one, and reckon tonnes of other shooters would be too... But there are bugger all about?

Is there a reason they don't make more?

Still counted as a manual action firearm like our bolt actions on regular license right? It's not classed as semi-auto or anything is it?

I played around with a few .22 options and although great fun and basically accurate, the style of action means you can never have a really tight lockup like bolt actions - so inconsistent results - 3 could drop in the same hole then 2 go elsewhere. Also rim thickness can have clear random results on the target. I can see if I have the targets laying around and post them up if you want.
I'm a paper target head so 4 mm + out and I am not happy.
Not sure if this is the same for centre fire rifles.

Cost would be one of the first things, more complicated to make about about 3x the price.

They're vastly more complication to make, while it's easy to make a reliable bolt action which is very strong.

A simply bolt just has to rotate a locking lug into it's groove in the action and you've got a solid base for launching a bullet.

Straight pull requires more moving and connecting parts to cycle in the same bolt space and more intricacy to make a working system. More difficult to make = more expensive, and for all the effort you've got a less reliable, weaker system.

And the rest... There was someone in Aus who was (or was planning to) sell straight pull AR15's and they where $9,000 or something from memory.

Their name escapes me at the moment... I'll post back when it comes to me.

Check out the roessler Waffen "RoWa" Titan 16, or the Browning Maral, the browning even has a spring return reload setup. The RoWa is a switch barrel to drool over and can be had for about 2k up.

Not after reading the Euro magazine Testfakta 2007 comparo of Howa,Blaser,Mannlicher,Tikka,Sako,Antonio Zoli,Browning,Remington. They did a barrel blockage test on all the rifles by jamming a projectile 100mm down the barrel and then firing a round . The Browning and Remington barrels exploded "with extreme risk to shooter". The others survived with bulging and distortion. The rifles were all hunter versions in 30.06 . If I can find the link to the test again I'll post it up as a topic and translate it to English.
