We were out yesterday shooting gongs at 750 and 1000yds in 15mph winds with the 308 Howa - was good fun only took 2 shots to get on the 750yd gong.

Most painful thing in the word is just sighting in at 100m and getting it wrong spending 20 shots getting on paper at that distance

Yes I can see where it could be a frustrating sport alright, but having a very good understanding of how it all works etc it didn't take much for my mate to have us on target, the only thing he didn't allow for was the 1300 above see level, which could help explain our results at the 1000yd mark apparently (I know SFA about long range shooting) but I must say I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about it, it was fun!

I've taken to just sighting in at 25m so it's reaaaal easy to be on paper straight away and dial it in. Don't have to worry about wind, bugger all shooter error etc.

Just gotta remember you need 4x the clicks at 25m than you do at 100m. So to go an inch down it's 16 clicks instead of 4.

Once you're on bullseye at 25m you're shooting about 3" high at 100m.

Get on bullseye at 25m, then do 12 clicks down on your scope and you should be about zero'd at 100m

Give or take a click.

The quickest way I know to get a rifle sighted in is look down you barrel and adjust until you can see the target, then pick you're POA take the shot, then make sure the the Xhairs are back on POA and adjust the Xhairs to the bullet hole you just made, shoot another shot and you should see that it hits the POA this time, simple and very quick to do, then its just a matter of a quick fine tune to where you want it - 2 or 3 shots and you are done!

I've seen fella's shooting 20 or 30 rounds and still couldn't get it sorted right I've told em that little trick and they are like s**t how easy was that

I dunno what others are doing that I was missing but looking down the barrel never got me on paper.

Try it at 25 or 50m and see if that helps. Are you're scope optically centred or not?

It doesn't matter now as everything's done for the immediate future.

I could just never get it to take the times I tried.

I was doing at 50m from memory, maybe I should have tried 25m there too.

Oh well, next time maybe.

Yeah mate next time try 25m - so long as the first shot leaves a hole anywhere on the paper its fine, then its as I said keep the xhairs at the original POA and just dial the xhairs over to the hole, then she's ready to go bar any fine adjustment for vertical etc.

It really is very quick and easy to do when its done that way.

Jays, what are you doing?? hunting plinking? what are you shootin?
if you sight in for a reasonable Maximum point blank range, you can sight in for, depending on certain things, between generally 20 to 25 m and be sighted for your MPBR of say 230 or 250m... (not 100m). this is the result of the projectile trajectory crossing the sight plane twice..once on the way up the rainbow, at 20 odd metres... and another time on the way down the other side of the rainbow at 200+m.....
Provided you know the trajectory you'll have an idea of where it is at 100m to either adjust or to use the MPBR method to always be within you 2,3 or 4 inches at any range within....

You put a clay on the bank @ 50 or 100 and take the shot then you can see if it's low and left or right and high and any centerfire rifle will leave a point of impact on the bank so you can see how far off it's shooting!!!Simple as that!!!!!
