Importing 10 round mag for Rem 7600

Post by Point223 » 02 Jan 2015, 2:27 pm

Hi guys,

My .308 7600 Remington came with two 5 round mags. I'm looking to buy a 10 round mag and am wondering what are my options here in Australia, and whether it's okay to import ones from the states and how would that work?

So far I looked at Wild dog, and KKK - any other ideas? I'd love a Magpul mag but do they make these for 7600 .308?

Serious replies only please.

You can import magazines, but they're controlled and require customs approval.

You need to submit a B709 form to customs for approval to import them, otherwise it will just be seized upon entry.

Yep you can.

Submit your B709 to Fed Pol, takes a few weeks for approval I think then place your order and have it shipped.

Not a big deal, other than the wait for approval. Pretty sure there is no cost to submit the application, just your time.

This is from Customs.

FIREARM MAGAZINES
To import firearm magazines into Australia, importers must first obtain written certification from the police firearms or weapons registry in their State or Territory, or written permission to import from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department prior to importation. A firearm magazine body is also considered a magazine for the purposes of the Regulations.

POLICE CERTIFICATION
To import firearm magazines into Australia, the police certification will be in the form of a B709A Importation of Firearms – Police Confirmation and Certification Form (B709A Form).
To import handgun magazines into Australia, the police certification will be in the form of a B709D Importation of Firearms – Police Confirmation and Certification Form (B709D Form).
Handgun magazines imported by sports shooters are limited to a maximum capacity of 10 rounds. See the Importing Handguns fact sheet for further information on this restriction.
The original B709A Form, or B709D Form, must be presented to the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service at the time of importation.

Contact the registry and they should send you a form.

I've been through the import process to get the Barrett .416 brass and it's not overly difficult but will take 3-4 weeks to process. You can do it all online and it's free so no money up front BUT it will have to be collected by a registered firearms dealer that you nominate on the B709 forms. The dealer may charge you a fee for this service as they have to go to customs to collect the shipment. If you purchase from the U.S then check if they require an export permit cause that's another $250USD on their side and not many online shops over there are prepared to go through the process. The way I was going to do the brass was to bring in 2000 cases and split the cost with my dealer but after getting all the approvals to import I managed to convince NIOA to import it for me directly from Barrett which worked out a fraction cheaper.
I'd look at alternatives such as the mag used on the Ruger Gun Scout .308 or possibly see if you can get hold of an "Accurate" mag as used by Colt on the 2012CLR. I have 2 of the Accurate mags sitting over at Magnum Sports in Chatswood being sold on consignment, possibly if your over that way have a word to the boys and see if they will fit your Remington. The Rugar and Accurate mags are very similar, in fact the Ruger mag will fit into the Colt but has feed issues every other round so not recommended. If you're not local to Sydney I'll call the shop Monday and see if they still have the mags and can post them to you, if they work then $ changes hands and if not then post em back and we both learn something :)
How's my posting?

Thanks for the offer mate I already purchased a wild dog 10 round from Abelas gun shop. I'd rather use something custom made to fit the rifle rather than use interchangeables. Thanks again.

I've bought myself a wild dog 10 round. I'm still yet to test it out. Its dear, but read good reviews about it. I'm wanting to get a KKK 10 rd mag as well although read some shocking reviews but they're $50 so worth trying.

Abelas in Carlton NSW, Sav. That's where he got one. Try them.

(They have a big store in Thornbury, VIC too which could order/ship if the NSW doesn't have any more in stock)

Sav, word for the wise mate if you go there and they try to sell you the Eagle plastic mag DON'T buy it. They're crap and worth $10 in the states. They charge like a wounded bull for them something like 180 or some ridiculous amount.

What ever happened to making your own magazines? There was a topic here a while ago about checking the legalities of it.

Anyone remember the outcome?

Ahhh excellent thanks for that I was actually looking at a couple. I think I'll stick to wild dog.. Seems like the better alternative.

I got told the other day by the gun shop that there needs to be some modification to get the mag functioning correct (apparently feeding problems etc..)

Can anyone confirm or is the wild dog mag fine?

Modification? Doubt it...

Load and cycle a few rounds in and out to smooth things out and they should work fine.

That's all I've ever had to do with mags.

I still haven't tested the WildDog yet. I have been busy with work and all. I'm hoping to get to the range next weekend and pump a few through it and see how it goes.

The manufacturer specifies that it's suitable/compatible with a 7600 remington. I'll be pissed off if it doesn't cycle properly I paid $260 for it, IT BETTER EFFIN WORK!
