Ruger Guide Gun

Post by squirrelhunter » 15 Feb 2015, 3:45 pm

Anyone seen one of these about?

Like them or not the Ruger Scout went gangbusters, following the success of that I thought their guide gun would be a slam dunk.

Some bigger chamberings with a removable brake seems like it would appeal to lots of people, but I literally have never seen on at the range or shop.

I have never seen one either but I must admit I don't look as much anymore at what other people have got unless they approach me first .
Some gun designs get a popular following because they are considered cool in some way but sometimes that coolness can wear off and next year it's something else in vogue . There is nothing wrong with the basic Scout concept if it suits a purpose but I think it has limited sales appeal compared to say Tacticool concepts .

Other than in the NT maybe I reckon there is no market here for it.

338, 375, 416.... All too big for 99% of shooters.

If you were in North America, Canada, Africa different story.

Looks like they'll be expensive too.

Over $1,200 US on the Ruger site, wonder what they are landed here for. Probably more than someone wants to pay for a Ruger.....

They are listed on 3 aussie gunshop websites and prices are around the 1400 dollar mark, seems like a lot but if you want a 375 or 416 it might get you shooting quicker than is you have to save for a sako

Hmm, not as much of an increase as I expected.

Still.... A normal Ruger is about a grand I think? It's asking a bit.

Scout was about $1,100 too I think?

Haven't seen one up here either (Not that that means much coming from just one guy).

An hunters up here will already have their big-boomer though, so wouldn't be rushing out to replace it with a Ruger just for the sake of having something new.

Buggered if I know then.

Maybe everyone is advertising them because they're in the importer catalogue but can't get them.

Same old story for the US shipping to Aus.

Too big??
In vic the standard for 'forest work' was 270win or 30-06, but there are a heck of a lot of 338winmag, 375H&H and 458winmags getting around... so no, I wouldnt say these pussycats are 'too big'.

Bigger the boom, bigger the shove, bigger the grin.

I have mausers from various manufacturers, I've always looked at the rugers but avoided them only on account of the manufacturing method (cast). Though I've never come heard of a failure from inferior action material/strength I've been seriously considering a gunsite, especially with the newly available shorty short barrel....

But a Rooga in a serious chambering, in a shorter open sight config is very appealing, 375Ruger or 416Ruger, The RCM cartridges have no appeal, the 300/338winmags yes

A DG type rifle, CRF, big for $1,400 is good value! and there are plenty of critters all around this great land that will respond well to a 375 or 416 sized projectile......
I doubt they will get any cheaper as its likely Aussie interest rates will again be driven down by the so-and-sos at the RBA = dollar continuing to go south (more expensive imports  )

Is a Sako twice the value???

I say yes for the Guide gun.

Ok too big for 99% was exaggerating

85%? Something like that at a guess.

Tonnes of rifles on shelves already in more popular chamberings what was I was getting at.

These are just my thoughts, I could easily be wrong.

No one has to justify anything to me :D

You want it, go for it.

There's a place and there's appeal for the big cartridges. Just maybe not for enough to get a big shipment of the rifles here was all I was thinking,

Looks like a winner to me, I'd take one over a Scout.

I really like the Ruger brake system.

"system" is what they call it but that's talking it up I guess.

Basically it's this.

Image

Brake is 1 part, you can replace it with the sleeve if you want so you don't get the brake but it keeps the point of impact the same as using it. No re-zero needed.

Thread protector is the last bit.

Just a bit better than 'on or off' that others I think.
