Purchasing first rifle

Post by Stressless » 22 Feb 2015, 10:27 am

I'm looking to purchase my first rifle, just trying to get some opions on these rifles. All rifles will be .308
Howa 1500 with a Tasco scope
Ruger American with a Redfield scope
Savage Axis with a Weaver scope

Cheers Darren

Mate I'd go with the Howa, but you would want a better scope unless the Tasco is one of the old Japanese ones (which I doubt) because the new Tasco scopes have a terrible reputation . The Howa however , is a fantastic piece if equiptment ,I highs recommend it

Howa 1500 in .308 is what I primarily use. Great rifle, can't fault it, especially for the price.

Out of the scopes you've listed I'd go with the redfield. They're made by Leupold and actually have some excellent glass for cheap scopes.

No experience with the Ruger American. The general vibe around them seems decent though.

Savage are good, Howa are hard to go past for value though.

great Fan of the Savage, very accurate , very reliable, the price is right on the Axis II package.

(I have the Savage Bear Hunter in .338 Winchester Magnum)

Savage Axis is ok as long as you never want to fit a new barrel .

With the exception of the Ruger (only because it's relatively new, not because it's bad) you're going to get just as many votes either way.

It would be helpful to have a few more criteria to make a decision with if possible.

Got a budget?

Rifle will be for hunting presumably?

Will it double for some target shooting?

Would you entertain the idea of a varmint barrel or does it need to be a light sporter?

Comparing A vs B on just brand of two reputable rifles doesn't give a lot to work with.

What Korkt said. Would be good if you said what you want it for.
I like my Savage AXIS, its not perfect though.
I wish I had got the AXIS II with the accutrigger though.
The front end of the stock is a bit flimsy if you are shooting off a rest or bipod, but I actually quite like the gimmicky grip bits.
Mine came with a bushnell scope, apparently the weavers are a bit better.
