Deciding on my next gun

Post by Ding89 » 03 Mar 2015, 7:28 am

What are everyone's thoughts? I haven't grown up with guns so variety appeals to me. I've essentially got three different styles of rifle I'm considering:

1. Howa 1500 or t3 varmint in 22-250 or similar with a big scope and bipod
2. 44 or 357 lever action blued with wood and a short barrel
3. Mk3 SMLE

Which should I get first? I'll probably end up with all of them (and more) eventually, just don't tell the missus.

Both the Howa 1500 and Tikka T3 are good choices as far as bolt action rifles go.
A Marlin 1894 or Winchester 18XX series of rifles would be a good place to start for a lever action.
Couldn't comment on any SMLEs though. haven't had experience with them.
What do you intend to use them for? Or are you just looking to expand your firearm collection?

High velocity 22 would be range/bunnies/foxes, lever would be more of a scrub gun, and SMLE would be more to collect rather than anything else but I do intend on shooting it occasionally.

44 Lever and a 22-250 bolt are just about polar opposites.

Comes down to do you want to hunt or varmints first? The lever would do both but is far from ideal for varmints.... Not flat shooting, not highly accurate, more costly blah blah blah.

A T3 22 will be a much flatter, more accurate shooter but you can't hunt anything larger with it.

Baaah! I didn't read your signature before I replied, I see now you're more than covered for game calibres.

Get the 22-250 first.

Go the 22-250.

You're Winnies and Remington already have you covered for what the 44 and SMLE will do for you.

Go with the SMLE! I got one as my second rifle and its amazing! Pretty acurate too, for a 70 year old rifle!

SMLE is some good fun.

Seems like a varmint/low recoil calibre wouldn't go astray in your current line up though.

Sounds like the 22-250 will win out in the end but the others will be good when I get to them. Thanks to everyone for the constructive input.

Buy the tikka you'll be glad you did and the resale will also be better on the Tikka IMHO
