I am looking around for an under and over shotgun to suit my wife and have no idea what to get she wants to start shooting field and game and has used my akkar churchill with 30" barrels and is way to big and heavy for her does anyone have any ideas for a light budget shotgun to suit a 5'6" she has used a winchester 91 and that suits her a bit better but needs the comb raised

Mmm, perhaps consider a side x side. Some of the cheaper ones are very light weight.

Maybe have a look at the Browning Synergy, see how that fits her. Really I guess its a matter of going to a gunshop with a good range and trying a few out to see how they fit and feel to her, that's about the only way you will find what you are looking for really.

The other thing you need to try and find is someone who really knows shotguns and how to make sure it fits your wife correctly, that's a very important part if not the most important part (it must fit her correctly to get the best results using it).

Anything in a 28-30" is going to be on the heavier side.

A 20" version in the same shotgun would be bout 800g less which makes a big difference when it's all on the front end.

Open to shorter barrel options?

I will be interested to read the suggestions as well. My wife is serious about taking up clay target shooting some time soon.

The most important thing to remember……..SHE needs to go see for herself and pick the one she likes and feels comfortable with.

Great site I have joined here

I would suggest a 28'' barrel.

Miroku, Franchi Pheonix, Bettinsoli and fabarm have options with 28'' barrels at realistic prices. My wife shoots my Franchi Pheonix in 30'' barrel, she's short and around 55kg and manages OK. I noticed the franchi pheonix in 28'' felt more ''compact'' and I believe would swing easier for a short/smaller person. The Miroku mk70 in 28" felt a little bulky. This still won't help with felt recoil though, more so just the swing of it...

Get your wife to shoulder them all and take her time, she'll find one eventually.

That's it, gotta shoulder them.

Could make perfect sense on paper but feel wrong for the shooter and mean nothing in the end.
