Rifle Range - Latrobe Valley, VIC?

Post by cala90 » 27 Mar 2015, 3:55 pm

Hey guys,

I recently got a couple of new rifles (22LR and 223). I've been looking for a range to sight them in and shoot a few targets (non competition). Is there any ranges around Morwell or Traralgon etc that allow this sort of thing? I've googled and found the Moe and Rosedale rifle clubs but they seem like they're only competition ranges?

Sorry for the dumb question!

Cheers

Is it? In State Forests? I've read some say it's legal and some say it's not.

Just go into State Forest...my local cops don't give a damn...I can hunt anything in there.

I see you have tried the "Shooting Australia" website as well. Each one will give same answer.

Magical grey area!
At least if you decide to do it out in the state forest, find an old quarry.
Safety first!
Also, do not shoot trees, you get fined for destruction of flora.

To add a little more to North East's reply....

If you have 'hunting' as a genuine reason on your license you can sight-in in the state forest.

It's a bit of a vague area but the emphasis is on 'sighting in' rather than 'target shooting'. I don't have any documentation in front of me to quote sorry, but the line is something like 'sighting in to ensure humane hunting' which is fine.

As mentioned, avoid sticking targets to live trees and damaging trees is a different issue. Set up a paper target in front of a dirt embankment or logged stump.

Usually some logged stumps or collapsed trees anywhere you go here so easy to find a pin up for your target without hitting a live one.

Feels like they're enforcing stupid laws on either side of the country.

Look out everyone in the middle, they might start squeezing.

We're a pretty feisty lot here in Vic.
We’re the leaders in road rage for example.
Squeeze us and we’re likely to explode pushing the “fringe” states off into the ocean.
How do you think Tasy got to where it is?

I learned that all shooters did a 'hands across Tasmania' line across the then peninsula and each fired a shot into the ground. Cut it clean off to drift away.
