Maximum Capacity?

Post by Beechy » 21 Oct 2013, 8:51 am

The law states for Category B - Muzzle loading firearms; centre fire rifles (includes pump action not automatic or semi-automatic); any combination of shotgun and centre fire rifle, or black powder ball firing cannon (Category B licence automatically allows you to use Category A firearms).

What is the maximum capacity for Cat B? Because my reg certs say max 5, but my remmy uses a 10-shot mag, and my 9422M can hold 11 + 1....

I'm almost certain it's 10.

From my own memory, and also a mate of mine was looking to get some extra mags for his Ruger Scout and could only get 10's...

Hmm. Frustrating...

Couldn't find category B specifically but there is this for C and D.

category C longarm means any of the following-

(a) a semi-automatic rimfire rifle with a magazine capacity of no more
than 10 rounds;

I realise that's semi-auto which changes scenario, but if they only let you have 10 round magazine in a rimfire rifle , surely you can't have a larger mag under a lower license for a centre fire rifle.

And just for additional info -

category D longarm means any of the following-

(a) a semi-automatic rimfire rifle with a magazine capacity of more than
10 rounds;

If 10+ capacity mag = category D license, that would suggest the same again.

I did my firearm safety course not too long ago and was also told 10.

I think you'll find that it lays in the tiers of licenses.

As you know, and like Lorgar touched on there is A, B, C and D licenses from "lowest" to "highest"

Even though it's not mentioned, I think you'll find the capacity limit on C implies that B cannot be higher because it's a "lower" category license than C.

I think you can be sure it's not 5. Like mentioned above, the factory magazine that ships with the Ruger Scout is 10 and they sold like crazy when they came out.

You're registration certificate will say a magazine capacity on it as part of identifying the rifle, but it's not necessarily the maximum legal limit.

To continue using Ruger as an example -

If you had a .308 Hawkeye your FA certificate would say the capacity would say 4.

If you had the Scout as well its FA certificate would say the capacity would say 10.

It's an identifier, not a limit.

If you have a reg certificate which does not match your rifles actual capacity, a call to Licensing & Regulation Division to correct the details is in order - 1300 651 645.

Definitely something to get corrected before you have a safe inspection IMO.

You can confirm the limit for your 9422M while you're at it.
See you on the firing line.

Cheers for the info guys! I will call licensing and correct the certificates. Would it also be worth telling them that I've dropped the Rem 700 into a coyote tan MDT chassis? Because I think it may raise some eyebrows come inspection time... :D

I'm reasonably confident stock type isn't recorded at all. As long as overall rifle length is above the limit you're all good.
