If you're concerned about the recoil get a muzzle brake. The .30-06 is loud enough at it is. A few extra decibels won't make much difference. Recoil comes down to .223 or .243 levels. Anything that make shooting more comfortable has to be a good thing.

2 or 3 shots should be enough...unless you get really anal about it...like some people do.

It was fine to stand and shoot but got to me a bit on the table, It didn't like S+B that much the Win and Rem were ok, the best group I got was 33mm at 100mtr and it seemed to drop around 100mm at 200mtr.
Will take it to the range on a solid bench and try some other ammo.

Just get some 150g rounds and you'll be right.

Don't worry about muzzle brakes. Noisy, expensive, heavy and bulky. Look crap too!

The look of a brake doesn't bother me, except when people put on breeching brakes with the spikes

I used some 150gr and could not tell the difference from the 180gr, the 30-06 is fine to shoot standing but sucks a bit on the bench.

Nothing wrong with a muzzle brake. I've got one on my .30-06. Recoil is down to .223-.243 levels.

Heaps mate.

Even on bigger guns than a 30-06. Makes a .300 win mag feel less than a .243.

1290 get your 30-06 out of the closet

Post by KWhorenet » 16 Jun 2015, 8:22 am

Hey 1290,

Have you got any pet loads for your 30-06.

Make sure you bring it if and when the get together happens... :drinks:

Yeah, I had developed that load with the 168gr NCCs, 48grains of 06h....

but its just not consistent, all over the shop with the velocities, because 30-06s are just too gay for today (as in happy :unknown:) the case is out of proportion and poorly designed IMHO....so yesterday....

I swapped over to the 308WIN with the same CCs, reduced the load by 4grains (cause thats all I could fit in the little case, I find by gently tapping the full neck 4 times on a firm bench) and it seems to work well!! good velocities, accuracy and a dream to shoot.

So I'm letting the 30-06 leave the stable....they're just a compromise, too long, so the extra bolt throw really slows me down.....the extra mass of the longer action tires me out (I am getting on in age now, its hard being a near retiree lugging heavy rifles through the boosh).

I could not find anything that shot consistent groups with the 30-06 and got a .308 so much better, just suits what I do

I'm wading in here a bit late I know,, (3 pages)
Hey there RSJ,, I've got a Rem 700 Mountain in 30/06, which is even lighter I think,

It shoots fine sitting, standing, or prone.

My very first centre fire was a sporterised .303 and as a teenager I never gave recoil much thought.
Then I got a 30/30 years later and thought Wow this might kick. What a bummer, I was disappointed.
Then I bought more,,, and more,,, each time expecting a helluva kick.

It wasn't until I moved into .375 H+H Mag that I was happy,, knowing it did have a bit of a kick.

As for 30/06, I cant pick any difference from a .308

I'm sure you will be happy with yours,,,,, no sweat (we need a sweaty emoticon Mods,,, how about it ?)
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
