First time with a 30-06

Post by rsj223 » 07 Apr 2015, 11:12 pm

I got offered a Remington 700 sps in 30-06 very cheap and there's room in the safe.
The biggest I've shot is a 308 with 180gr and my 12g but want to know how the 30-06 compares to these and would it be best to shoot first time off bags or standing.
I guess I'm a bit scared but was the same with the 12g.
Also if anyone has one what does it like to shoot, I think the guy that had it was using Federal but will check.

Kick more than a .308 or 12 gauge but not up to .300WIN...close but it's alright. It's said to be the limit most people are reasonably comfortable with. With a light rifle it says "g'day" quite quickly. But it rocks...classic caliber.

So better to stand or put it on bags?
Oh and I forgot I had a few double discharge from the 12g and i loved it

You'll be fine any method....don't put the eyes to close to the scope....don't worry about it, it's not that horrendous.

Its just me over thinking it, was shooting next to one at the range and the feeling of the air that passes you was great

I've got a 700 in 30-06. Recoil is fairly tame.

Yeah spot on Yoshie,

I've only fired a 30-08 in a military firearm like springfields and one M1917 so they're fairly heavy compared to a sporting synthetic rifle so i went to a calculator to compare

comparing an 8lb rifle .308 shooting a 180gr at 2650fps and a 30-06 shooting a 180gr at 2800fps recoil is just 14% more, you'll hardly notice in the field but could be more noticable sitting at the bench off bags

According to Mr ADI, the loads make for near equivalency between the 308 and 06, eg the AR2208 max load with 180gr for 08 is 45gr giving 2661fps while the load for the 06 is 47gr giving 2668 fps...... other powders though give greater velocity gains considering the greater capacity of the 06 case...so the above (Chrony's) velocities are about max 308 vs 30-06 but the 06 needs 57grains to get there...

30-06 gives greater felt recoil on account of more powder burn all else equal....
Chrony agree with the greater recoil and recoil velocity but those comps are wrong, unbookmark the website :D recoil should be 20 versus 23 ftlbforce

Also, recoil velocity is simply a conservation of momentum calculation; {look away now those susceptible to head hurt syndrome }

Velocity (rifle) x Mass (rifle) = Velocity (bullet) x Mass (bullet)

therefore by dividing both sides by Mass(rifle);

Velocity (rifle) = [Velocity (bullet) x Mass (bullet)] / [Mass (rifle)]

Velocity (rifle) = [ 2800 x (180/7000) ] / [ 8 ]
= 9fps

Not the websites fault mate, garbage in garbage out

I took a quick look for some velocities and took a guess at powder charges just in order for a basic comparison. Interestingly your numbers show about the same 15% extra recoil for the thirty ought

My T3 Lite .30-06 performs fine with Rem Core Lokts 180g and Winchester Pointed Soft Points. Both are reasonably priced and do the job. I hardly ever shoot it passed 100 yards though.

In general recoil is most easily managed standing, then off the bench, then prone.

Standing you'll sway back absorbing some of the recoil.

Off the bench you're locked forward a bit more and can't really sway.

Prone you're a straight line and it's all concentrated directly into your collar area.

IMO.

I once shot my 300wsm prone lying with a thick foam gun case underneath my chest for extra height. The case seemed to take some of the sting out of the recoil by a fair amount Since it was directly under my shoulder.

If you're concerned about the recoil get a muzzle brake. The .30-06 is loud enough at it is. A few extra decibels won't make much difference. Recoil comes down to .223 or .243 levels. Anything that make shooting more comfortable has to be a good thing.

Wow a muzzle brake makes that much difference, recoil would concern me heaps if I was shooting targets for half a day, I hope it dont take to long to sight in

It was fine to stand and shoot but got to me a bit on the table, It didn't like S+B that much the Win and Rem were ok, the best group I got was 33mm at 100mtr and it seemed to drop around 100mm at 200mtr.
Will take it to the range on a solid bench and try some other ammo.

Just get some 150g rounds and you'll be right.

Don't worry about muzzle brakes. Noisy, expensive, heavy and bulky. Look crap too!

The look of a brake doesn't bother me, except when people put on breeching brakes with the spikes

I used some 150gr and could not tell the difference from the 180gr, the 30-06 is fine to shoot standing but sucks a bit on the bench.

Even on bigger guns than a 30-06. Makes a .300 win mag feel less than a .243.

Yeah, I had developed that load with the 168gr NCCs, 48grains of 06h....

but its just not consistent, all over the shop with the velocities, because 30-06s are just too gay for today (as in happy :unknown:) the case is out of proportion and poorly designed IMHO....so yesterday....

I swapped over to the 308WIN with the same CCs, reduced the load by 4grains (cause thats all I could fit in the little case, I find by gently tapping the full neck 4 times on a firm bench) and it seems to work well!! good velocities, accuracy and a dream to shoot.

So I'm letting the 30-06 leave the stable....they're just a compromise, too long, so the extra bolt throw really slows me down.....the extra mass of the longer action tires me out (I am getting on in age now, its hard being a near retiree lugging heavy rifles through the boosh).
