Ruger guide gun feedback wanted

Post by Lyam » 21 Oct 2013, 2:37 pm

G'day everyone.

Here's the story...

I have a Tikka T3 sporter in .308 which is fine.

It's use for a bit of hunting and on the range for fun.

This has been my first rifle and it's all broken in now and I'm thinking about expanding the collection a bit :D

I must admit, .308 is about the limit of my tolerance for recoil.

I'd like a .223 rifle for the range, but that's then no good for hunting.

Since I would have a dedicate range rifle if I got the .223. I thought the Ruger Guide Gun could be a good option and I could go up to a 30-06 or .300 win mag for a better hunting cartridge but with the brake that the Guide Gun comes with it would still be easier to shoot than the stock barrel .308?

I'd sell my .308 sport and have a dedicated small calibre range rifle, and powerful hunting rifle to be used less so that wouldn't be a big deal.

Is my thinking right for the levels of recoil for the brake? What's everyone view on the Ruger Guide Gun too?

You're in the right ball park with the muzzle brake.

A good brake will take the recoil of a 300 win mag down to .243 levels or thereabouts.

A little less for 30-06.

Pretty sure the Guide Gun is in stock at places now if you wanted to get your hands on one.

Took them 9 months after they started advertising it

But now you should be able to find one.

There was a review on the Ruger Guide 2-3 months ago in the Australian Shooters magazine.

I think they tested a higher calibre than you're looking at, like 375 Ruger or something, but it got a good write up and accuracy - clover leaf at 100 and all that.

If you're interested in 300 win mag in a Ruger, you might want to look at the Ruger African as well.

Much the same with muzzle brake, iron sights etc. but has 23" barrel instead of 20" on the guide.

Longer barrel for the magnum will do better IMO.
