Noob Question

Post by Muddy1967 » 22 Oct 2013, 8:22 am

I am showing my ignorance here, but can someone explain the acronyms you use here.

OCL = Overall Cartridge Length

JTL = ?

and all the other ones.

Yes.

Also COAL = Cartridge Overall Length too. This is the more common abbreviation in my experience.

A lot of these are have the same meaning too, just changes depending on who's reloading book you're reading.

If you get a Speers reloading book, a Hogdon book and a Lee book you'll find one uses COAL, one COL and the other OCL - yet all mean the same thing.

Still waiting for my PTA to come so I can pick up my .222. MAN I HATE WAITING :x :x :x

Thanks for your patients and understanding.

Just ask at the time. No one will bite your head off.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

This probably warrants a sticky post with common shooting acronyms for the new guys in Off Topic forum or somewhere... I'll put something together in the future.

The more common ones you're likely to encounter though...

  • BT - Boat Tail
  • BTHP - Boat tail hollow point
  • CF - Centrefire
  • F Class - Google this for full details, but in short it's competition shooting under a particular set of circumstances.
  • FMJ - Full metal jacket
  • FMJBT - Full metal jacket boat tail
  • GR - grains
  • HP - Hollow point
  • LR - Long Rifle (i.e. .22 Long Rifle, not "long range" like you might expect)
  • MOA - Minute of Angle
  • And plenty more...

I'll put an extensive list together at some point in the future.
