ruger scout or remington 7600 ?

Post by cujo201 » 07 May 2015, 8:37 pm

hello guys and gals , im looking into purchasing a 308 for close and medium ranges (20 meters to 400 meters ) for knocking down feral game as well as target shooting with good grouping for plicking as well as being light enough to carry while hunting as well as being able to cycle a follow up shot if needed . So i guess a do it all kind of package , my thoughts ar rather the Ruger scout 308 or the Remington 7600 both are in my budget and both are capable of doing what im looking for in a rifle . anyone have pros and cons that i can weigh up to help me with my decision ? :D

Another option is the Browning BLR...

I have a 7600 I like it I have had some feed problems with Winchesters but none with Remington's so I've switched to Remington's and haven't had a problem

I haven't had a lot of experience with the 7600, had a couple of shots through one once and it seemed ok. I've had my scout for a couple years now and I've been very happy with it. No issues with feeding. I was able to produce three shot clover leaf groups with it at 100 yards with the iron sights.

Tough one for me. Neither has the kind of accuracy you'll be happy with for target shooting nor shooting out to 400m.

I had shot a mates 7600 a few years ago and found it "clunky". By that I mean to cycle the action took more force than I thought necessary and it was noisey and far from smooth. The trigger was frankly horrible with a long creepy pull. I think the trigger was responsible for its poor accuracy and my mate was looking into a timney replacement at one point.

I haven't shot the ruger scout but I own a ruger m77 mk11 which doesn't have an adjustable trigger. The pull is heavy but much better than the Remington and again replacemen, adjustable units are available. I think the long 10round magazine could be a pain shooting it prone or off the bench but that's something you could work around. As for accuracy I'm yet to hear great things but it's really a scrub gun by design and not a savage f class.

You do well to find someone that would let you have a handle of the two guns, even a shot or two before you buy.

Some other things to consider might be as suggested by Browning is the BLR lever gun with detatchable magazine or even a marlin 30-30 lever, the tikka CTR also comes with a 10 round magazine that's shorter than the scout.

I don't personally think any of these guns are going to be awesome at doing 50m AND 400m... You be better off picking one of the above mentioned 3 guns for close work 0-100m and if you do end up shooting a bit out to 400m, have a diff rifle..
To me, I'm rarely, if ever, using my scrub gun, then suddenly attempting a 400m shot..

i went to my local gun shop today which let me have a handle of the rifles im interested in . the remington felt like a toy and the action was clunky ,the finish was like a nerf gun , i even nicked my self on the sharpish edges of the fore stock :( , im not impressed at all . The ruger scout had a better finish about it , seemed better made with a little bit of weight to it which i liked . The big mag i was not too fussed with hoe ever i can purchase lower capacity mags which will not get in the way as much. Price was the Ruger was $1200 and the Remington was $1650 .00 both brand new . thinking of the finish and the fact that i already have a Ruger M77 308 which i do enjoy and have had no dramas with ,i do believe the Ruger Scout is ahead , how ever a friend twice removed has invited me to test shoot his 7615 and his mates Ruger scout over the week end :) watch this space .......

That sounds like the perfect result.

LOL, a mate let me have a shot from his IAC lever action shotgun. OK says I, cycled the lever, sliced my thumb open on the side of the action. Kwality with a capital IAC

Agree, 400m is a bit of a fantasy with the Ruger Scout unless you're happy shooting dinner plates.

If I remember right Jeff Coopers criteria for the Scout Rifle concept was that they would shoot 2 MOA at 200m.

That's about the best you could hope for from the Scout I reckon, likely a bit less.

I'm really happy with my Scout but a BLR take-down would hit the spot too :D
