Who's a fan or owns a full stock rifle?

Post by aaronjo » 16 May 2015, 10:58 am

Just lurve the look of these babies!

Did some research and found that apparently accuracy is not as good and there's a higher chance of rust with the barrel being covered with a full stock but for me it's forgivable for just how good they look.

It'll be a heartbreaker if you drop it while hunting but you also don't want it to be a safe queen.

Anybody has experience with one?

I don't have a modern full stock but I do have an old Steyr that's a full stock and my SMLE was as well. I found the secret to getting good accuracy off the bench with them was to ensure you rest the fore end in the same place for every shot. This ensures the wood presses on the barrel at the same place for each shot providing consistency.

For field shooting the same applies with hand placement. They are beautiful rifles mate.

As for the rusting just pull them down and clean and oil them after a trip out bush and before long term storage and you should be right. Have a dehumidifier or some desiccant packs in your safe should help too

Only the good old smelly. One of my favourite rifles of all time(i don't own one, but thats something i hope to rectify in the mid term).
On paper, they're not great ballistically, but unless you've shot and hunted with one, you can't appreciate how great the rifle/round combo is or how fast it can fire.
Apart from this, i wouldnt want a fullstock for hunting. Not just for the weight but i would hate myself if i scratched it...

Lolz!

It sure will be one of those love/hate relationships. Love to take it out and shoot it but hate to damage it.

More years ago than I care to count, I bought an InterArms MarkX Mauser with the Mannlicher Stock,308 Winchester. Accuracy wise the gun is acceptable, aesthetically, I love the looks.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

They're beautiful rifles but does seem a bit like unnecessary weight to me.

Too pretty, I'd be terrified to lead on anything with it and damage the stock

Just think of it as sacrificial timber to protect the precious blueing on the barrel

A friend used a 222 mag Mannlicher-Schönauer with set triggers as a fox rifle back in the days when skins were worth around 30 bucks. Could shoot the balls of blow flies at 200 yds with it. Not sure if it was a carbine model but full wood stock. Scope was a Pecar 6X,

His father also used a Mannlicher-Schönauer in 222 Rem., hammer forged barrel but not full wood stock, spotlighting foxes. Very accurate too. .
(sigh) those were the days.
Boom, Boom! Tikka, Tikka, Boom! Shoot first, video later.
