First/New firearm!!!

Post by joker » 07 Jun 2015, 11:42 am

hello again every one,

I finally committed to purchasing my first firearm and put a deposit on a Puma Hunter .22lr JW15e :D :D :D :D (28 working days until i pick it up)

It comes with literally nothing, just in a cardboard box and a spare magazine.

Luckily my brothers old gun safe is still at the house so storage is taken care of. Although i am looking to purchase a new safe but will be using his old one in the mean time until I purchase a new one.

Im going to have heaps of questions following this purchase hahahaha, and ill start off with my first one. As i was trying out the .22 at the shop the bolt was quiet stiff and the gun dealer there told me that you'll just need to shoot a fair bit of rounds and oil the bolt and itll eventually smooth out.
is this something normal with new rifles? (also i understand you get what you pay for, but it is my first firearm to learn on and didnt want to splurge to much)

Ive been trying to research on this topic but havent really been able to find anything which started to get me worried that it shouldnt like this.

thanks in advance for everyone help ;)

Not unusual for the cheaper end of the market to need a little extra work to get em working better, get some Autosol or other polishing compound and polish the bolt races etc to take any rough areas off a bit (you could probably just put some compound on the bolt and work it back and forth which should do the same thing, or get a dremel or something similar and polish the action.

Things generally smooth up and loosen up with use so you could just sit in front of the TV and work the bolt over and over which should see it free up over time.

thats the autosol you are referring to? just usual a average cloth and go over the whole out side of the bolt to polish it up?

I probably will try just running it through like you said if im just sitting in front of the TV. But as im working the bolt over should i keep spraying the bolt with Lanolin to oil it up and work it? Or is the lanolin more of just a guard for when storing the firearm?

thanks Scott

Yeah that's the stuff mate, see how it goes, like I said the cheaper end of the market generally need a bit of a tidy up on things like this, she'll free up nicely over time I'm sure.

The Lanox will help lube everything and make it smoother to use generally and is perfect for protecting metal parts from rust.

I've got the Puma Hunter Jw-15e and it's a fantastic rifle , I have probably 10,000 rounds through it ( Based on the number of Remington Bucket o' bullets I've bought for it) and while it was a bit stiff at the start it now functions flawlessly and is incredibly accurate even though I have not once cleaned the interior of the barrel . The only other problem I've had with it is that I put so many rounds through it I wore the magazine out ! But that wasn't a problem because it's the same magazine as one of the Cz .22 rifles so I just bought one of them and had no problems since .

Yeah mate the Bucket o' bullets are the cheapest .22 ammo I've found at about $90 per 1400 at my local gun store but it's not quite the most accurate ( Still gets a rabbit at 100m) , the best I've ever used has been Highland subsonics which at just $50 for 500 are pretty cheap too and they shot 1/2moa at 100m but they might struggle to kill a fox at that distance due to being subsonic.

so what ammo would you recommend for killing fox's at maximum distances?

any other advice you can give me on the puma would be great.

:problem: 223.... 204....

I'd be looking at a 40gn high velocity hollow point bullet that you can group to around 1/2' at 50m.

Shooting foxes (or anything) with a 22lr, i'd stick to less that 80m. In fact, i'd stick to whatever range you can reliably put a bullet less than 1" from your point of aim and no further.

Hey Mate, I have the same rifle. Put a 3-9x40 scope on it, bought a 10 round polymer magazine and love it. It's not the best gun in the world. the bolt is pretty rough, but it's a rugged gun that has never failed me.

Enjoy it! Use it to learn and guide you further into the sport of shooting.

Cheers,

The bucket o' bullets has never failed me at 100m and less but if you want to stretch the little .22s legs you could try CCI stingers which go a fair bit faster than regular .22 bullets and kill at a little but further away. As for advice on the puma I don't really have any other tips apart from keep the bolt oiled :friends:

Well once I get it and start shooting I'll have a better idea of my capabilities to how my aim is

nuzo - I'm thinking of getting a Sabre 3-9x40 air rifle scope on it for $64. But first I wanted to try open site and experience how that is at least.
You reckon it's worth getting that scope or just find a cheaper one on ebay

congrats joy

thanks nuke, I'll be sure to keep it oiled. This waiting period feels like it's going to take forever though :x

:drinks: cheers everyone

Honestly I don't think any scope you'll get for less than $100 bucks will be any good, I've got a Nikko-Stirling 3-9x40 scope that you can get off eBay for about $100 and that's about the cheapest scope I'd ever buy. The really cheap scopes tend to be more trouble than they are worth mate . And yeah days spent waiting for a gun seem to take twice as long as regular days

Well if that's the case I'll just wait to get a half decent scope and not waste the money or trying out the cheap crappy ones.

Trust me i know lol. Worst thing is that the gun dealer says you have to wait 28 working days so that just added an extra two weeks to the wait :x :x :x

When you asked for tips so you don't buy overly expensive cleaning stuff,

Here's one that applies specifically to .22

* Don't clean it too much.

Many rimfires have been given a hard life unnecessarily thru excessive cleaning of the bore.
I'm sure there are many other members that will agree with that.

Your first you will remember it for some time haha
Serious tho dont try to clean it to much .22 bullets are wax coated and they realy need the wax in the barrel research that bit and you will find most manuals for .22 will say clean after 10,000 round only if accuary starts to get bad a 3x9x40 scope will get you passed where you can shoot at the moment but i would get one for a jw.15e
good gun mate has one I was realy suprised all day at 50 m into about 20c area if he does his bit .
have fun with it

Each gun likes different bullets. Best to get a few different kinds and see how your gun likes it. I'm lucky and can get good groups out of highland rounds and they're $40-45 for 500
if you don't get stuck, your not trying hard enough

wow that feels like a weight off my shoulder no cleaning

Yeh i read that before but didnt actually realise that cleaning it to much could do harm. I thought it was more like an option where it didnt make any difference if you did clean or not.

yeah i probably will go with the 3x9x40, but just want to try open site and see how it feels. Then i actually need to start researching on scopes and find the appropriate one for a good $$$

oh and thanks for the heads up

cheers joker, (by the way i plan on keeping my first :) ,, since where on the topic have any of yous still got your first firearm?)

Cleaned mine once in 12 months just to see if it would make a difference nup still the same.
Used mine with open sights for a few weeks (loved it) then put on a cheap Nikko-Stirling 3-9x40 it does all I need
My first .22 I got from my Dad then gave it back to him then he gave it to my nephew its kinda the family gun.

No worries Simmo glad I could help  and thanks to every one once again. Oh Simmo if you want to know about cleaning there was a thread we just went through with heaps of information there for us beginners ;)

RSJ I think I'll be going for the Stirling when I'm ready also. That seems to be the the budget scope for a .22 to go for.

I like the idea of having a family gun, which gets handed down through the generations :D

That's of the barrel mind you.

Still clean the bolt, action, stock etc. and use a suitable oil or other product to protect it.

Of course don't want it to rust :)

do you also oil the trigger, and how do you clean synthetic stock (just wipe it down with a rag?)?

Clean everything except putting a brush through the barrel.

Wipe down everywhere with your chosen cleaning product, muzzle, trigger guard, trigger..... All the nooks and crannies. Then a super light coat of oil to protect all.

A synthetic stock itself doesn't need cleaning, but it might as well be clean. Otherwise you'll just be transferring grime to other parts of the firing during handling.

Just do it as part of doing the rest of the rifle with the same cleaning stuff.
