Trouble chambering .270 cartridges in BLR takedown

Post by keen » 24 Oct 2013, 2:53 pm

Posting this for a friend who's a computerphobe, so will do the best I can with what information I can give...

He recently picked up a new Browning BLR takedown chambered in .270 win.

He was given a bag of once/twice fired .270 brass, has full length resized them, but the rifle won't take them.

Cycling it to feed is very sticky or problematic, to the point where he has to manually remove the cartridge after it won't accept it.

Any ideas for what he's done wrong/can try?

Has he just tried putting a box of factory ammo through it?

That would be a simple enough way to work out if it's an issue with his resizing/brass or the rifle itself.

Along with testing factory ammo in it, I'd suggest triple checking the brass was sized correctly.

Could be a height issue and the brass isn't going completely into the die and not being fully resized.

If that doesn't reveal something try another die if possible.

I'd be surprised if the rifle wouldn't accept properly specced brass. Suggests die/fire brass problems to me.

Before he tries more cartridges, just get a new factory brass and one of his resized ones and try dropping them into the chamber to rule out any issues with with COAL or bullets, seating length etc.

If neither will go in he's got a chamber issue.

If factory only will go in he's got a resizing issue.

If both his resized brass and factory brass will go in, then a full cartridge won't he's got a COAL or related feed issue.

Like above, from the sounds of it he's only tried this second hand brass?

We're just throwing out random guesses until he's tried some new brass or factory ammo.
