Pandora's Box perhaps?

Post by KWhorenet » 26 Jun 2015, 5:29 am

Was given a bunch of 'moving house' stuff. Handy gear.

Included was a tin box that opens to be a compartmentalized kit storage box apparently for 303 gear and ammo?

My first thought is it would suit range shooting. Reason being it'd hold cleaning gear, tools, ammo etc. See the flip out ammo holder plate.

Also in the box was a leather pouch, ladder adjustable range sight? What looks like an aperture and mount bracket plus fittings, a cleaning pull through plus cloth and a couple of lead projectiles with sort of a pointed tip I think?

Going straight to the pool room, well office desk for now.

What can you confirm correct or add to this story?

Damn! And I thought I had the box with the lot.

Which side of your brain comes up with bearded men and goats¿

Apparently bearded men and goats can be had from 800+ yards in Sandy conditions.

I think you could make a killer camping-portable mini combination grill, oven, and smoker.

I know a guy that could make a bong out of it.

Definitely looks like a range box for an old full bore shooter.

The rest is a nice piece, I assume the two halves screw together then the spikes go in the ground and you rest the rifle in the cradle.

I've seen some lovely timber boxes like this but this is the first sheet metal one I've seen

It shows its age but in the flesh it makes its a bit more special I think.

The rest forks are neat for sure, they are threaded so a grub screw would work.

The pouch could clean up nicely. Stitching is fine. No cracking, so oil and swab out grime may be all it needs to live on. Leather laces are fine too.

The ladder sight as he called it is in great condition.

Maybe I need a 303 in the future to put this gear back into use.

I told a mate last night "I never thought I'd say this but I'm really starting to like the .303 cartridge."

I tumbled a few hundred cases last night and can't wait to load them up again and take the No4 out again.

.303 is not efficient, there aren't many modern weapons for it, but it is a great cartridge if that's what you've got. I honestly can't tell the difference in recoil between a .303 and a .30-30, although I know that is partly due to weight.

OK so I'm getting a 303.

Might as well go for a classic aussie issued model for mil service shoots and get into it.

If anyone knows anyone I should talk to please pm me.

It's a slippery slope old mate

There are many options and a complete thread could be filled with arguments for each one

For military service shoots it's hard to go past a No4 is probably going to be more accurate but it's the No1 that our blokes jumped onto the beaches of Gallopili with and English built ones at that, not Lithgow's as some believe.

Expect to pay good money for a original looking (unmolested timber) Lee Enfield and more again for something with matching numbers.

My opinion is just grab something and get shooting then worry about accuracy and condition later, the last thing you want is to pay big money for a mint condition gun in the dirt and put 30 rounds through it every week

Start on the Used Guns military rifle page and get an idea what's around.

Another option is a Swede, K98 or my first service rifle an Israeli K98 with the 7.62X51 NATO conversion.

The biggest downfall with the .303 is the ballistics don't look as good on paper as other rounds like the .30-06. But, and its a pretty big but, the .303 just defies the paper ballistics.

I own a modern .30-06, my brother owns a .303. And you know what? In any hunting situation i would be just as happy with one as the other.

.303 is one of my all time favourite rounds. There's just something special about it.

If you want to see more than 50 of these old things for sale and so much more you might want to have a look at this fair.

They're not all that bad

Though who was it (here?) said they won't shoot .308 because it has a trajectory "like a rainbow"

If you live in Australia you have to have a 303.
Come to think of it if you live in New Zealand, Canada, India, Britian, or any other place on earth you should have at least one.
Damn I'd bet even Martians would love one.

Also reminds me of the "10 Manliest Firearms."

http://manlyexcellence.com/2011/06/21/t ... azy-einar/

Obviously the SMLE is in there. Here is an excerpt on the Mosin:

"Of course, there are also M38, M44 and other variations of Mosin-Nagant and all are cool. All, also (except the M38), come with a bayonet. Russian doctrine held that the bayonet was mounted except while traveling in a vehicle, because the Russians understood that an empty rifle could still be a pointy stick—a Viking spear. The Russians loved to spear Turks. So, coincidentally, did the Vikings. This rifle sounds better all the time, doesn’t it?"
