The old man woke up one morning to fimd a 2m dugite by the back door. Now, it had rained quite heavily all night the night before.

So the old man walks out and this thing strikes at him, luckily missing, but the old boy managed to grab a nearby shovel and drive it down just behind the snakes head.

Now, remember where i'd said it had been raining heavily the night before?

Well, far from removing the head, it just pushed the snake deep into the mud. This was quite a fewyears ago and I was still at home at school but i still distinctly remember being woken by the old man yelling for someone to come help as he couldn't reach for anything else and there was no bloody way he was letting go of that shovel. Meanwhile, the snake was slowly gaining more and more freedom and it was bloody pissed.

I walked outside to see what the commotion was and quickly grabbed an axe and finished the job, much to the old man's relief

I have 400 acres and access to a bulldozer....

All this silly talk reminds me of a story from a few years ago. I walked into a Sears and there were told old guys (employees) milling about when I asked them about a deal they had on buckets.

Old Guy #1: "You got a gun out in the open. You a cop?"

Me: "Nope."

Old guy #1: "Well, you plan to kill somebody or something?"

Me: "Not really, why, you got somebody in mind?"

Old Guy #2 Jumps in: "Yeah, my wife!!!"

I've always wanted to have a pretty good mix.

Air rifle for laughs, The CZ because 22lr, Short barreled pump for heavier close work, heavy barreled .223 for longer range pests, heavy barreled 308 for longer range bigger pests and the O/U for flying pests. I wasn't in the market for another firearm for a while but I've got an Adler on order and now getting itchy feet about a longer range caliber rifle now I've stretched the legs on the 308, hopefully that's the family complete lol.

Well I've only got one rifle now but always thought that a 12ga, 22LR, 223 & 308 should cover all my bases.

Now I've got the 223 but the problem is what to get next...

Why not ?

Personal favourite for bunnies is a 40gr ZMax departing the muzzle of my Sako 22-250 at 3990 fps...it's my red mist load :)

For the odd bit of explosive action I disassemble Galahs with the .204 Ruger.

14 Rifle calibres, 8 Pistol calibres and 2 Shotgun gauges so I should have virtually any game likely to be encountered in Australia at ranges from 0 to 2000 meters. I won't go into the anti-material capabilities of some of the big rifles....

Why the hell would you shoot a bloody Galah?

# 1 reason to shoot a "bloody galah"

They would have to be the most raucous, irritating, loud, screeching, annoying, aggravating, abominable bird that God ever put breathe into, that have a habit of sitting on the house roof at 6-30am specially to wake you up.

You should be out of bed by then anyway, I have them all around my place. Unless they get into the sunflower crop you leave them alone. If you think Galah's are annoying you haven't spent much time in the company of Corella's. And I don't shoot them either.

I've shot thousands of the buggers, 5 gallon bucket of 12ga every morning and evening for weeks on end during the Christmas school holidays as a young fella. They sit on the top of the sunflower crop and get fat at the farmers expense eating the seed. Tried "Gas Guns" which worked for a bit then the feathered clays got used to them and took no notice so we went back to 12ga deterrents. When there's follies of Galahs containing thousands, the only effective crop protection came in the hail of hot lead shot. I got so good with the old Bentley SxS I was dropping more birds then shells fired, often nailing 2 - 3 per shot, they were so thick. If they ate too much seed over a period of time their feathers used to fall out due to all the oil in the seed, there'd be bald ass galahs wandering around which was quite funny to see. I have the same dislike for Galahs now as I did then so I still up them any chance I get up the farm with whatever firearm I happen to be carrying. If it's a pest and causing damage then it's a target be it rabbit, fox, cat, dog, galah or feral project manager :)

Long-billed / Hooked beaked Corellas are a different ball game, I have a pair that will come and sit on my back doorstep teasing my cat through the sliding glass door waiting for me to feed them. They are not very noisy and cause no damage, I feed them from time to time as I don't want them getting lazy as they are wild and should be able to fend for themselves.

This guy I can hand feed and occasionally pat him.

Brett, I've spend most of my life in the bush, and some of the biggest cattle stations in Australia. I've seen plenty of birds shot off crops, but I never saw anyone take such great delight in it as you apparently do. They are not feral, nor are they endangered, but I have a soft spot for all of out native birds and the problems they have with feral cats and foxes. They shouldn't have to put up with feral humans as well.

A bit harsh with the name calling and not particularly fair to judge based on what or what may not be apparent. I'm not selective on pests, if it's doing damage and on the farm I don't care if it walks, runs, hops or fly's it get's the same treatment as any other pest. No different to many here who shoot snakes, they're natives as well but less cute I guess. Opinion noted and hope there's no ill will.

No ill will mate, and didn't intend any name calling, nor was I judging. I've just have enough of blokes up my way cutting loose on the birds for some stupid reason. If you really want to talk about pests try flying foxes. I fully understand that the crops have to be protected, but it's like putting out a bait, the Galahs just see it as food. Maybe you could get Norton to run around naked with his big gun. That would scare anything

Just had a mental image of Norton with his big gun joined by Blackened and his big stick running naked.....you really know how to make me wish I was blind :)

I see up Bilpin way they have nets over the apple orchards, I thought to keep out the birds but now it occurs to me it's probably for the flying foxes. I understand the frustration you have with city hunters getting in the bush and cutting feral, shooting anything that moves. I'm certainly not that type, spent almost all my school holidays as a kid out on the uncles farm. Hare's are a protected species up there as my cousin has some attraction to the dopey way they hop about so we don't shoot them.

I'm 4'19 and suffer chronic small man syndrome, treatment so far has been a series of either turbo or V8 cars, Hayabusa bikes and big rifles. They only alleviate the symptoms though and I'm considering a crowd funding project to search for a cure. I probably got enough experience to get a professorship and lecture on the subject :)
