You can take out any animal that walks the Earth with that Swede if you make a good shot and use the right bullet.

Spring and follower is all that's missing? grab it while you can. shouldn't be too difficult tracking down the spares

bentaz wrote:But while we are on old milsurp rifles, i got offered an Arasaka 7.7mm for 150 bucks, its missing the magazine spring and follower but is in otherwise ok condition.
Its got volley sights like most old mil rifles but then its also got sights that flip out sideways that you use for leading planes.
Have any of you guys played with one? I'm told the 7.7 jap is basically a rimless 303 round.

Actually, I read about how the Arasaka could use captured .303 ammunition in the rifle if there was no Arasaka cartridges left.

There's a video on youtube by iv8888 about the arasaka torture test. That thing can go through heaps of torture and still work!
If something doesn't work, apply rule .303!

Not even the other way.... how would you extract it, you fingernail??
Maybe it was the bullet (you know, the bit the comes out of the thingy) that could be interchanged.....(they are the same)

Dad fought the Japanese in WWII, 11TH Airborne Division staged in Papua New Guinea combat in the Philippines, he brought home both a 6.5mm and 7.7mm rifle. The 7.7mm cartridge is noticeably different than the 303.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Wiki says this...

Japanese 7.7 mm ammunition

Japan produced a number of machine guns that were direct copies of the British Lewis (Japanese Type 92 machine gun) and Vickers machine guns including the ammunition. These were primarily used in Navy aircraft. The 7.7mm cartridge used by the Japanese versions of the British guns is a direct copy of the .303 British (7.7×56mmR) rimmed cartridge and is distinctly different from the 7.7×58mm Arisaka rimless and 7.7×58mm Type 92 semi-rimmed cartridges used in other Japanese machine guns and rifles.

was not aware of the 3 7.7mm types, this is interesting;

l to r,
6.5 then 7.7 Semi-rimmed, rimless and rimmed....
I wonder if the rimmed was on sufficient issue to provide the allies with battlefield 'pickup-ability'

Latest Toy,
12.17x44R rimfire Model 1870 Swedish Cavalry Carbine by Carl Gustafs dated 1877. I intend not to convert this one to centerfire and will endeavour to make some custom cases.

More a tool to build a toy...finally after almost 4 months of waiting the reamers arrived in the post today :D

I'm essentially upsizing a precision benchrest rifle to small man syndrome specifications :)

There's a finishing reamer, resizing reamer and a set of Go / No Go gauges. These have a modified throat compared to the regular 50BMG chambering. The refinisher was ordered as I'm considering a re-chambering of the TAC-50 to improve precision. The finisher is for a custom 45" long 2"-1.75" stainless match barrel currently being made (I hope).

This is similar to the action I've purchased that is currently residing in Santa Barbara awaiting a barrel. This monster is 12" long and 2" in diameter though the version I have is right hand bolt / left hand load port.

If I'm lucky I might be able to get the first shots downrange by Christmas.

What about the 20-50, whens that coming?

All going to schedule and no unexpected event's it might make an appearance before Christmas. I'd love to open a range where the average punter could come and shoot all sorts of weird and wonderful firearms, sort of a Disneyland for firearms enthusiasts. Will never happen, so I should consider taking up the bro inlaws offer of going into business with him. If he was in Colorado, Utah or Texas instead of California I'd already be there :)

2inch tube brett?? thats a good 2 man lift bro....do you even lift

The reamer looks to have a very short leade indeed... spec would be about 24mm with an 8mm freebore and 35second angle, that one looks half the length with twice the angle..... if thats the case - why have you gone that route?

Maybe even start a build thread as it looks very interesting so far! and given that I've shelved my build, at least I can watch yours move along

This is my new toy.
It's a Winchester M70 Safari Express in .458WM.
Am loading 76gn of 2206H behind the Woodleigh 500PP for 2150fps.
It's been bedded, has a delightful trigger and is fitted with a Pentax 2.5x scope.
This rifle is easily my favourite and I just love everything about it. 8-)

Very classy....perfect combo, a 45 mag in a mauser action...

The load looks like a mid strength Lott load (less fps), not a win mag load though....
Have you chrono'd that velocity ? In the win mag I'd be starting a bit more modestly - unless you've done that and arrived there

Good pickup on the reamer cause picking that from just the picture is impressive. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but you're very close to the mark. Virtually all over the counter rifles in 50BMG have the original browning machine gun chambering with the .518 throat which is great for reliability but less then ideal for precision. These reamers are a slightly modified version "Skip Talbot" profile as used to by him to set and old the 1000 yard 50cal record (2.6") before Lee Rasmussen shot a sub 2" group to take the record in 2009. Unfortunately Skip Talbot passed away July 2005 otherwise he may very well have improved upon his record.
I plan to do a build thread once all the components are in the country as no point starting anything because it'll be another 4-6 months before that time. I've been working out the forearms on the press but may need to get onto the HGH to lift this thing, the action alone is a minimum of 128oz or 3.6kg for us Aussies. Factor in another 35lbs or 16kg for the barrel and there's 44lbs or 20kg just for the bare action and barrel. I'm aiming to come in under 35kg which should be achievable and with that sort of mass, recoil will be reduced. That's the plan anyway...

Do you mind me asking. What is your main use for this rifle? By the way I love it the winny M70 is one of my favourite rifles. I have one but compared to yours I feel like a little boy with a new cap gun. It's a .22-250 featherweight.

Hey mate,
Originally I had 77.5gn behind the Woodleigh 500PP for over 2200fps but it was a touch hot, so now I've worked our this load and it's just right!
Properly loaded the WinMag can give some surprising velocities

Don't mind you asking at all!
I have a bit of a love affair with the .458WM and have owned 3 of them. It's a fantastic caliber and can be used from anything to deer to elephant. And they also possess incredible accuracy.
I got it because the dream is to one day go to Africa :allegedly: but until then it's my sambar rifle. 8-)
I also have a bit of a thing for M70's so the combo is just perfect in my eyes
