Mauser 7.62 - Safe to fire .308 Win rounds through it?

Post by C.j » 02 Sep 2015, 10:47 pm

Hi guys,

I recently got an old Mauser m98 stamped 7.62 and I was wondering if it is safe to shoot factory 308win rounds through her?

Could anyone help me out please?

Most likely an Israeli conversion (pics?), the stamp indicates it was for the NATO round,
The Mauser 98 is bullet proof....like the pun?
Other than variations in manufacturing standards/material supply issues/quality during say peak war production, you cant go wrong.
Provided the headspace is ok, (action lugs can recede/damage/wear cause HS issues on any rifle) then its ok.
If in doubt get a smith to assess (firearm retailers are not smiths, necessarily) did you buy from a dealer??

The only 7.62 that you SHOULD NEVER assume to feed win/NATO rounds is the CETME chamberings - at least not until a thorough check as they are a lower pressure variant of the NATO, issued by the Spaniards..who converted 98's to Cetme, but I've never personally seen one in the flesh in Aus....

Hang on... The guys posted some pretty detailed reasons why it wasn't in the linked topic.

Where you do you 'totally safe' from after all that?

Are you just talking about for your K98 specifically do you mean?
