Reloading ammunution help in Melbourne

Post by juststarting » 11 Sep 2015, 1:29 pm

Hi folks. I am considering starting to reload. There is like chronic shortage of good cheap 308 ammo, which sucks. Silvwr lining to that I guess is me being a bit more self reliant.

If there are any reloaders around South East (Melbourne) who feel like doing a bit of a show and tell or demo - please PM, I would appreciate it - through gratitude and beer.

Just don't feel comfortable starting without ever having a demo, etc.

Yes, I know, there are lots of great YouTube videos, but it's not quite the same as having someone spot your mistakes before your mess your rifle up or yourself.

I can't help with a demo but which part are you uncomfortable with exactly?

Something specific or just pulling the trigger on a reloaded round for the first time?

I did a reloading course sponsored by my local ssaa range here in brisbane. It was pretty good, I'm sure there would be something similar over there

Slightly off topic, butI reload to save money. Having said that, I use premium bullets so don't save as much as I could, but still get accurate premium hunting ammo cheaper than the cheap factory stuff.

Also, I don't reccommend PPU ammo for those that want to reload. I've found the brass doesn't seem to like my sizing dies, where I have no issues with other brass.

@sandgroperbill
This is exactly what my LGS said. PPU - good for cheap, but shouldn't use brass for reloading.

Just saying what I've been told. I wouldn't know in practice. Never reloaded.

On that note, I have been trying to find PUP 308 168gr for ages and it seems as if everyone is sold out.

For your first reloading perhaps it would be better if you buy some new brass,if you get quality like Lapua,Norma,Hornady,Remington etc you don't have to worry about case prep.
You can pick up packs of 100 fairly cheap then you just need large primers,powder and projectile of your choice.

If you get some 110 gr Vmax or anything else around 110-120 grain with start loads you will have some lower recoil ammo which will leave smaller bruises :lol:

JS, if you're looking for decent but cheap ammo with decent brass for reloading, I've had good experiences with Remington Core-Lokt. It may be worth a try.
