Hi all, I'll be picking up my M17 that has been converted to a F-class target rifle soon, just wondering if anyone here has a full/sporterised/crap P14 or M17 in their collection they'd like to share. Consodering they are one of the best military bolt action rifles out there.

if it is indeed a 'US rifle Model of 1917'.....that I doubt you guys would have chambered it in the old red coat round

Some of these actions have been known to show cracking, make sure you give it a good looking over.....

The P14 is in .303 and the M17 is in 30-06.

And my one comes in .308

Not that I've seen so far. .308 is the way to go alongside 7-08 and maybe 223.

Those aperature sights should be fun. Hitting 500 yard targets with no telescopic sights and just a hairpin infront of a circle to work with.

I've seen guys shooting 30-06 in F-Class but they're usually loading 190-200 grain pills behind quite a bit of powder for velocity so it's not very recoil friendly to get the most out of the cartridge compared to the .308

aperture sights are heaps of fun. We do that with black powder, homemade bullet lube and cast lead loads off cross sticks. Should be easy in a shed off a bench.

FWIW, if it is anything other than 308 or 223, you will have to compete in F Open.

I'm currently building a Winchester P14 up into a 6.5-303 Epps.
The mods are:
30" Bartlien HV#9 S/S barrel 1:8. ( waiting on the shipment to arrive )
Timney trigger and Dayton Triaster speed lock kit which converts it to C,O,O
Richards Microfits thumbhole stock. ( waiting on export permit )
Custom made picatinny rail to suit the action.
1 Manson reamer but again around a 8 or so week wait.
A set of die's from CH4D and forming die's to suit using the reamer dimensions.

The P14 / M17 actions are bloody good but there are a few tricks to them, that some gunsmiths know and some don't. One of them is the bolts locking lugs which have a 2 degree cant. So when opening or closing the bolt it wants to cam in or out. Also the firing pins on the M17 and P14 are slightly difference in diameter. These are just a few.
The action has I think for memory are 3.5 - 4% nickel in it pretty bloody hard. The action itself at the rear can be contoured to the same as the front ( knox ) or Rem700, Rem 30 and I think a Win mod 70.
A book I recommend for the P14 / M17 is Pattern 14 and US Model of 1917 written by Charles R Stratton, this will give you a heads up on them as well.

Oh this F class machine you got does it have a blackwood stock on it ?

Also in regards to cracking what I have seen this is mostly do to removing the original barrel, which are done up way to *^%ken tight. The best way is to put a relief cut in the barrel then they come out easy.

I have a two M17's that I am willing to part with, one is a sporter in 243 ack imp,and the other is a std 308 range rifle. The 243 shoots really well, has cock on opening and I haven't even looked at the range rifle yet. send email address and I can send photos

As Regards Converting the M 17 to Cock on Opening I have Dunlaps "Gunsmithing " which shows the dimensions of the altered cocking piece that has been altered along the lines of the 30 S Remington or the 720 Remington which were commercial Enfields .The 30 S utilized a Cock on Opening modification to the bolt which called for welding up the notch in the bolt and regrinding to allow for the longer firing pin fall as Dunlap dislikes firing pin falls shorter than 3//8 inch which is why I am avoiding for now the Dayton Traister set up. I am somewhat confused by his instructions and the notch for the safety is causing me some concern. Can anyone comment on this aspect:
Is the notch for the safety milled into the cocking piece(in a new location) after welding up and the cocking piece then re- hardned and polished
