Advice on 45-70

Well , 444 is something to keep in mind. Back to 45-70, from what I bin reading, is very flexible when reloaded. From mild to wild. Anyone read the write-up on terminal ballistic research website ?

what would ya recommend as a good accurate load for pigs and deer BP ? did ya ever get to check the speed of your loads ?

Nah I never chrono'd anything.
Honestly,any of the factory rounds would work well. Maybe go for something like a woodleigh for sambar.
I've shot 300gn jacketed,350gn blackhawkes,405gn cast,570gn cast,single,double,and triple .457 round balls, and no.4 shot out of mine using trailboss, 2206h,2208,2205,and re7 powders

probably wont get the chance at sambar any time soon BP, was looking at factory 300 gr federal hp as a go to load in the short term, should do well for pigs/deer and such. you've tried a lot of loads alright. what gun you shoot ?

A marlin 1895cb and a Baikal sxs

what barrel length is the marlin ? i was thinking about a 1895 with 22" barrel . how's recoil ? heaviest i've shot was helping a mate sight in a 300 win mag. in a tikka t3 lite had a bit off thump shootin' on a bench

26". Don't worry about recoil with factory loads lol

Have a marlin 1895 sbl no issues with the build quality I topped it off with a aim point red dot couldn't be happier with the combo real quick to pick up on anything running off and the zero paralax error minamises the risk of missing being a rushed shot. Projectile wise I love the 300gr noslers packed ontop of 55gr of 2207 its a combo that puts anything down quick. Hope this helps

I reckon that's what I need to try. When I loaded hot 300gn projectiles I couldn't get my rear sight low enough to get them on target. And I don't like the extra weight of a scope.

As much as I liked my ‘94 Winchester, even with a Williams peep it took time to line up, and as distance increases groups get bigger. Low power scope or red dot would improve things a lot. Appreciate the advice azza. How do you find the barrel length ? I was gunna go 22” to get more velocity/accuracy

Great short barrell on the 1895 gets into some thick stuff without getting hung up. I'll take shots out to 150 without hesitation. Could always go for a 1-4 or a 2-7. 2-7 would be great for the longer shots but at the end of the day thats what either the 308mmor 243 is for.

I was thinking 2-7 azza. Has a wider field of view even at low magnification than a 1.5- 5. At least according to leopolds specs. Bit more flexible maybe ? According to what I’ve bin reading, hotter hand loads flatten trajectory to make 45-70 usable to 200. I tell ya’s there’s nothing finer than finding a new “old” caliber to play with

Well,I found out yesterday that driving bullets as fast as you can get them works far better for bang flops lol
Looks like I'll be keeping my 45/70s
