In my opinion the 325gr Hornady's hurt like a son of a bitch in my pistol :) Otherwise quite an accurate round but pricy. Get onto juststarting and see what load he's running.

i meant , plinking - 22lr soft drink can, 45-70 large oil drum  cost of ammo is a concern, wont be doing high volume shooting. probably just go with the federal 300 or ppu 405 cause it's cheap and see how i go.either one should be enough for pigs/deer. i have a press, still doing a bit of last minute reading before doing a batch for 6.5x55 :D

Uh, well, actually, an old gas tank was used lol.

Re: ammo cost, I reload. At almost $3 for the cheapest factory cartridge, it's not the most affordable round. I just reuse the brass, after shooting couple of boxes of factory ammo. I cast my own bullets and i use trailboss that's reasonably cheap, so yeah definitely a cool cheap plinkanator1000 :)

why for BP ? bit big for wabbits ?

Performance is lacklustre on the stuff I hunt unless I use light jacketed projectiles, and it doesn't come anywhere near the stopping power as the various 458 mags but it costs very nearly as much to shoot

Hmmmm, cast boolits is something I never considered, especially easier in a single shot regarding OAL and crimping for lever tube mags. What do you use for lead, or do you go around car parks with a screwdriver and steal wheel weights ?

What were you hunting BP ? I’m looking at a marlin down the track as a scrub gun for pigs and deer.

Goats and long tailed rabbits.
To be fair, I was mainly running a cast 405gn at under 1500fps,a combo that really isn't conducive to bang flops.

I might have to keep one and try running the 405s as hot as I can and just say stuff it in regards to the leading lol

Pop a gas check on the pill and lube them. You won't get leading... Or buy HRBC cast bullets, they are powder coated; or cheaper copper jacketed from thebulletfactory.com.au.

A: I do lube them
B: the mold makes plain base bullets
C: I'm not buying bullets if I can cast them

Since this thread has been reactivated, did anybody discover if Edwardo went on his buff hunt with a 45/70?
I have to admit I have owned a 444 Marlin since the early 70's but I have to also admit that had the 45/70 version been available at that time then that is what I probably would have bought.
Now, in retrospect, I can see that the 444 is far more flexible due to the range of projectiles available compared to a 45/70 and easily comparable in power.
Now somebody mentioned 'bang flop' . What do you think happens when you use 180gn hollow points when despatching varmints up to the size of largish pigs?

444 was something I considered, but 45-70 seems to have a better range of projectiles and gear. One guy I know that had one , said you have to get the right projectile as some 44 mag bullets fly to bits. Opinion anyone?

I think that was half true earlier on when the 444 was introduced. Nowadays I'd be pretty sure they'd make suitable projectiles

Well , 444 is something to keep in mind. Back to 45-70, from what I bin reading, is very flexible when reloaded. From mild to wild. Anyone read the write-up on terminal ballistic research website ?

Nah I never chrono'd anything.
Honestly, any of the factory rounds would work well. Maybe go for something like a woodleigh for sambar.
I've shot 300gn jacketed,350gn blackhawkes,405gn cast,570gn cast,single,double,and triple .457 round balls, and no.4 shot out of mine using trailboss, 2206h,2208,2205,and re7 powders

probably wont get the chance at sambar any time soon BP, was looking at factory 300 gr federal hp as a go to load in the short term, should do well for pigs/deer and such. you've tried a lot of loads alright. what gun you shoot ?

Have a marlin 1895 sbl no issues with the build quality I topped it off with a aim point red dot couldn't be happier with the combo real quick to pick up on anything running off and the zero paralax error minamises the risk of missing being a rushed shot. Projectile wise I love the 300gr noslers packed ontop of 55gr of 2207 its a combo that puts anything down quick. Hope this helps :drinks:

I reckon that's what I need to try. When I loaded hot 300gn projectiles I couldn't get my rear sight low enough to get them on target. And I don't like the extra weight of a scope.

As much as I liked my ‘94 Winchester, even with a Williams peep it took time to line up, and as distance increases groups get bigger. Low power scope or red dot would improve things a lot. Appreciate the advice azza. How do you find the barrel length ? I was gunna go 22” to get more velocity/accuracy

Great short barrell on the 1895 gets into some thick stuff without getting hung up. I'll take shots out to 150 without hesitation. Could always go for a 1-4 or a 2-7. 2-7 would be great for the longer shots but at the end of the day thats what either the 308mmor 243 is for. :drinks:
