Hi any one out there got a Rem 700 XCR 257 Weatherby Rifle. If you have , are you happy with it, accuracy wise, etc?
And, if any one has got a 257 WM, what loads are you using for the 100 projectiles,, I'm going to go with the Barnes100 grn TSX, to be used on Pigs and Dogs.
G'day Baz! I use 110g Nosler Accubonds ( 71.7 gn RL 25 ) in my Mark V Accu-mark. Did work up a load for the 100g Barnes ( Around the 72 - 72.5gn,Again RL 25 ) from memory but didn't continue with them because in my opinion,They're to bloody dear. I only use mine on deer,so I don't use it that often, so the price of the Accu-bonds doesn't concern me that much,Plus I achieved much better accuracy with them compared to the Barnes. If you're going to be using it a fair bit,Have a look at the 115gn Nosler Ballistic Tips,Heaps cheaper and will defiantly produce spectacular results on pigs and dogs!!!
Thanks Mick, I have ordered 100 of the Barnes, so looks like I'm stuck with them for while, but will get some loaded up for the Noslers and give them a crack.
I have a Weatherby Mk V Accumark in .257 that I love almost as much as my Sako 22-250. Best load I've got for 100Gr below but like any loads advised by other on the net, use your own judgement.
Projectile - 100Gr Sierra HPBT #1628 Primer - CCI 250 LMR Powder - 68Gr AR2213SC Seated to .001" off the lands Muzzle Velocity - 3328 fps .3MOA @ 100m
G,day Brett How much projectile do you have left in the neck of your cases being seated that close to the lands with the Mark V being as deep throated as they are? Reason I ask mate is that mine will cut a nice little .3 clover leaf at 100yds as well! I haven't measured how close to the lands mine are seated,My C.O.L is 84.00mm.
I may have just assumed I was .001" off the lands as that's my usual seating depth. Using the Hornady O.A.L gauge with the 25cal insert they measure 2.754" base to olgive. When I did the initial load development I tested 9 loads, 3 each for 75, 100 & 117 gr projectiles and 1 load in each was .5 moa or better so I stopped there as I didn't see any value going further for a hunting rifle. Probably one of the easiest rifles I have done load development for and it's a pleasure to shoot. It's big brother the 300 Wby Mag took 31 different loads to find a winner which is the most difficult I've found. Sometimes you get lucky in the fist few loads and others require a lot of work.
Mine was also unbelievably easy to develop a load for! A six load three shot ladder test and no load shot over.75 M.O.A A little fine tuning either side of 71.5 gns and there it was!!!
Fair question Mick. A mate of mine has been pestering me for a long time about buying my 25/06. so I said if a good 257 Weatherby came up I would sell it to him. So I got the Rem 700 XCR and he got the Ruger.
Should serve you well!! I have the CDL LTD in.280 rem ( My favourite ) from about 4 yrs ago. I was never a fan of Remingtons synthetic stocks ( Alway felt a bit cheap and nasty imo ) so I hope the have improved on there earlier efforts there!! Had a quick look on the web site and I see that they now have .257 Wby as a standard offering in the stainless fluted CDL ( Nice,I like my timber ) Anyway,Great caliber,You'll have a ton of fun with it!!!
Finding the right load is like finding the G-Spot, on some rifles it's worth the extra effort and time. On some you find it quick and others maybe never, for a great looking rifle I don't mind the extra effort
