Ruger .22WMR / LR - Serial scratched into bolt

Post by jsglano1 » 26 Nov 2015, 1:34 pm

This goes back to a thread I saw back in 2014, and I am responding to say I also have received the same ordeal in that my bolt has the serial number scratched on to it very crudely, and was wondering if this is normal practice by Ruger or what ?? my rifle was bought in 11/2015 in the U.S.
Has anyone else have one of these thanks...

Not unusual, I have a few rifles with the same thing on em, probably done at the gun shop I'd imagine.

My savage 22lr has the last 3 numbers of the serial No scratched on the underside of bolt handle. Helps to marry them up at final assembly.

I got my .308 Hawkeye about 2 or 3 years ago and it also has the crude scratching of a number on it.

Not the serial number though, some other number, no idea what for.

Obviously not a serial number at only 3 digits with the amount of rifles Ruger make.

So anyone know what it is :unknown:

The batch that was made?

Being part of the serial doesn't seem to make much sense.

If the serials are 9 or 10 long and all you've got is 3 numbers could be from any one of thousands of rifles.

I think its a stock code type of thing for the legs to keep track of which bolt belongs to which rifle.

If it's the LGS (or even the manufacturer), they should invest in some stencils and an electrolytic etcher instead of defacing an item that someone is having to pay good money for!

Doesn't your Howa have the same thing? pretty sure all mine do. :unknown: I don't even notice em to be honest, certainly nothing I'd be upset about I can tell ya. :unknown:

Pretty sure the numbers are the last 3 numbers of the serial No's on my Howso's

I mentioned in it passing to my LGS and they said they come like that from Ruger, it's not done in store.

Same with both my howas, I just assumed it was some sort of part identifying number using during the assembly/manufacturing process.

What do you expect ... It's a Ruger !

Heck ... if memory serves me right, I've owned Sako rifles with s**ty, scrawled stuff put upon bolts and such.

To the OP ...

You say you are suffering an "ordeal", really ?

Personally, I sorta like the thought of a humans hand making contact with my gun, in production ....

"Pretty sure the numbers are the last 3 numbers of the serial No's on my Howso's"
It was a common practice yrs ago for the factofy to etch the last 3 digets of the serial number on the bolt. This was to preve t mix ups during production. I rember the old 303s were like that.

But I thought the yanks banned child labour yonks ago. :sarcasm:
